4 x 8 Cas10 or 4 x 4 Cas 9?

Hi folks,
Okay, so I presently have two, 4 GB 1600 MB Corsair low Pro sticks in my system. My goal is to increase my RAM to as much as 32 GB which is what the Asrock Z77 eXtreme4 motherboard can take. Please don't concern yourself about what's needed for gaming, this is all about speech to text software, (particularly Dragon premium 12), which gets its performance primarily from the amount of L3 Cache of the CPU, number of cores the processor has, and finally, the more RAM the better.

BTW: Because of the proximity of the RAM sticks to my cooling configuration, (push pull for a Swiftech H220 means that one of the fans are competing for the same space as the RAM sticks), I need to use low profile.

1. Does it make a difference whether I'm using four sticks at 4 GB each, or two sticks at 8 GB each?

2. Which is better? Four sticks at a speed of 1300 MHz each, or two sticks at a speed of 1600 MHz each?

Because there is a budget involved I may have to settle for 1600 GB. So I may just buy two more of the sticks I have already... I don't know, sadsmiley.gif sigh... It begins to get so damn convoluted. Of course I would want the best latency I can get but there is a limit to the money and there's the question of how much of a difference in latency I would actually notice, (between a CAS 9 and CAS 10), when we’re talking about 16/32 GB numbers.

So my last question is basically; I'd like to hear some opinions from people who have had experience with RAM of this size. Even better, if there's somebody out there who also uses speech to text software and has 16 or 32 GB of RAM, I'd like to hear what you have to say about it.
Thanks, Rich

Simple question... Do you mind overclocking?

Theres the Samsung Magic RAM 30nm, it is one of the best RAM kits of, and OC'es like a champ. People have got 2133@C10/11 and some even 2400@C11

But for your case, I would get some of that RAM, and clock it cool at 1600/1866@C7-8, as they can for sure handle that (Most kits)

Good thing about it is these are made for low power consumption, so they dont have spreaders, so they are the lowest RAM you can find, and even at those 2000+ speeds, it still doesnt need spreaders, as the 30nm technology allows less heat to be produced. Thats my bit, now comment on what I said smile.gif

Thank You PedroC1999!
You have to keep in mind that the profile of these sticks have to be low. Remember, I have that push pull cooling configuration and my fan takes up the space that a regular profile would otherwise use.

In fact, even with the Corsair low Pro's, I still had to cut out a little bit of the fans frame so that it would fit. That said, no, I don't mind overclocking but I need to point out that having fast RAM isn't going to help speech to text software as much as having a lot of RAM. In other words, 8 GB of C7 won't help is much as 16 GB of C10. So really, I need to focus on those two questions.

I came across this in Newegg and they're on sale for $50, (from $62): Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-148-661&nm_mc=EMC-GD052713&cm_mmc=EMC-GD052713-_-index-_-Item-_-20-148-661). (They're VERY Low Profile)

They're getting some pretty good reviews and that means if I bought 4 of them it would only cost me hundred dollars! There's a time window though an ad sales going to be over soon. So I was wondering if you could answer the questions I asked, (1 & 2), assuming you do have an answer.

Thanks again, Rich

The Samsung Magic RAM is pretty cheap, and you WONT get anything smaller than it, also, getting 4x4 or 4x8 will be better, always try to populate all the RAM slots, this way, you can use Dual/Quad channel RAM, and this allows you to get better performance

THANKS!! Now that's what I need to know:thumb:. I'm going to check those out but BTW, is it possible to mix 1600Mhz RAM with 1300MHz RAM?

Yes, but it wont run in Dual/Quad channel mode, and you WILL lose performance, as the high speed RAM will have to downclock to the low speeds

Ah! Good, I was just curious. Now I have to find that Ram you mentioned... Newegg discontinued it.

Nope, looks like I may have to 'go in deep'. The "usual places" don't have it and what's scary is that even Amazon doesn't have it. (that's unusual)
