Windows Server 2008 R2 Battery Icon

Thread Starter
I not to long ago built myself a server and purchased some backup batteries for it but unfortunately no matter how I connect them I can't get the battery icon to appear in the task tray, if I go to turn it on/off it is blacked out and I have no ability to change the setting. Device manager does not show any unknown devices and the UPS software is able to see the battery. This is an issue because I am unable to configure what I want the server to do in the event it is running on battery as well as various other application behaviors such as folding at home.

Any ideas?

And yes I do have the correct UPS software installed. The UPS software can monitor and communicate with the UPS, I can use it to initiate tests etc but I can't get the windows battery icon to work =/

OK, I'll look into this and get back to you ... but first, does CyberPower claim their app is compatible with Server 2008 R2?

First - have you set it to display the power icon?

Second, how is the UPS connected to your server? AFAIK, you need to connect the UPS to your server via one of the UPS's serial ports and set it up as an agent - unless you have the remote monitoring card installed, in which case you set it up as a client.

The PowerPanel software that comes with your UPS has an "actions" tab that allows you to configure and initiate different actions

@ OS-Wiz

I believe they did, and their program is running perfectly fine on my system, its just the windows battery icon that wont work, the UPS software sees and can communicate with the UPS no problem.

@ un-nefer

If by set to display the icon you mean turn it on then no because that option is blacked/greyed out and I can't turn it on for whatever reason.

Currently I have the UPS connected via serial port and setup as an agent, but I do have the option of connecting it via USB.

I'm aware that the powerpanel software allows me to do that but unfortunately other programs in my system will not engage their defined behaviors when running on battery power unless I can get the windows icon working. For example folding @ home can be configured to pause when running on battery power, but currently when I'm running on battery power it doesn't pause because as far as everything in my system is concerned I'm not running on battery power.

The guy I was going to ask about this was out today. So, a quick scan of the PowerPanel install seems to need a USB connection as well?????

I'm not sure I understand your question, I did not have the USB connected when I installed the UPS software if that is what you are asking, I have since tried connecting it in attempt to resolve my issue however.
