How many rads need how many pumps ?

Thread Starter
Hi, I was wondering if there's a pump/rad calculator somewhere on the internet to be found - similar to PSU wattage need/ system components calculators.

I already got a Thermochill 140.3 Rad with 6 140mm fans in push/pull config and an Feser TFC X-Changer Dual 120mm with two 120mm fans in push. Soon I'll be addon a single 120mm rad at the end of the case.

But I got an idea of a "neat" radiator stand using my old Coolermaster Stacker 830 Black Case. Made same measurements and I think that afer a bit of "reverse engeneering" I'll be able to fit in six 360 rads with 18x 120mm fans in push/pull. The cases will be standing next to another not one after the other like in the picture.

The question is - do I need (I think I do - more rads mean more flow ressistance:) an additional pump to this config ? I already got an EK-DCP 4.0 pump (800 liters/h) which I find to be a very efficient pump. I'm also using 13/19 tubing.

I was thinking about connecting the rads in the Stacker case in this fasion:

What do you guys think ?

That has got to be one of the worst ideas ever. Stacking rads is bad, the air gets saturdated and can't cool effectively as it goes on.
martinsliquidlab.org you will have to manually add up all of the restrictions but he has all the radiators and fittings measured. He told me that a single a MCP-35x would be fine to run a GTX480 and a Mo-Ra 3 (9x120) with a gpu and cpu so you would be surprised.

I ended up using it on a GTX480 and a GTS120 with the gpu and cpu and my temps do not change with the PWM/Duty on the pump anywhere between 20-70% if I run the pump at 100% non stop the temps will go up from heat dump coming from the pump itself.

In other words you are doing the right thing by looking for some science before arbitrarily just throwing in more pumps and cash.

Oh yeh and sakerfalcon is def correct. You can find proof of what he is saying either on martinsliquidlab.org or one of the other radiator shoot out sites. Because there used to be a company that made stackable radiators.

Air looses its capacity to cool very quickly... it can only carry away so much heat.

Thank you for the input and this website link - much apriciated. Will do some reading beforehand.

Well i got my answer:

The stacked rads almost always perform worse than the solo rad with the same number of fans.

No prob... martinsliquidlab.org also has some interesting info on just how effective push/pull actually is so read about that too before you invest money into push/pull.

I do not believe that would perform well like others have said. You could fit a 3x120mm at the bottom, a 3x120mm up front and a 3x120mm up top easily enough. Radiators aren't very restrictive. A pair of MCP35X or D5-Varios would definitely be more than sufficient.

It would perform real well if you were using an air compressor to push air lol biggrin.gif

Find some 500 CFM fans and make it happen!

The CFM of a fan isn't nearly as important as it's static pressure when working with a setup he listed tongue.gif

Sadly even Delta fans push only about 250 CFM not to mention the noise ! wink.gif

The majority of modern radiators use a dual pass U flow chambers. This means all those chambers you see are NOT flowing independent of each other. Usually the combined area of the inside of the chambers flowing in a single direction is a LOT larger than the area of the G1/4 barb, with very little obstruction in the chambers path. This means the resistance they add to your loop will be negligible. The only thing you REALLY need to factor in to a large extent is the amount of waterblocks (as they are usually VERY restrictive) and the combined length of the tubing you're using.

On a side note, your idea WON'T work. You simply wouldn't have enough static pressure with standard 120x25mm fans. I'm really not a fan of these tests (no puns intended) because they fail to list the static pressure or model of the fans their using, and also fails to list the fin thickness or fins per inch of the radiators used, but it is a good representation of what YOU are planning to do. Simply put, under normal conditions your idea wont work.
