Need advice/feedback on a Video Game concept I have been working on.

Ok so I have been working on a video game for quite a long time. Working out the story, character development, setting, ect. It has been a brain child of mine for a long time, and just recently I have had the time to really put effort in it. I have ran a business for years as well as have a B.A. IT.

So i'm not inexperienced in the industry, just lacking in that specific segment of it. I would love nothing more than to lay out the plot, and basic idea of the game, but as I have yet to patent it (lack of resources) so I cannot do so. redface.gif

I would though like to inquire the general community about their experience or thoughts on my next step. My Goal is one of two things. I either start a kickstarter project with a general plot/theme, and some storyboard shots, Or I pitch the idea to a already established publisher/developer.

I personally would love to go the kickstarter route, and start my own project hiring professionals to help develop the game, then release it through steam. I can easily run it as a business and lead the direction of the project as thats where my skills lay, and hire those with experience in programming and what not experience.

My only problem is protecting the idea? How would I do that? The US patent office takes sometimes years, and is hard to narrow down a idea to be patented and can be quite expensive. I want to get this project off the ground now before someone else has this exact idea. The way games are going nowadays it won't be long. The genre is Horror FPS, inspired from multiple game styles like metro, crysis, slender man taking a "feel" from each one into a new concept.

I currently have together:

Storyline (general subject to change)

Characters (Also, subject to change)

As well as weapons, hud, equipment, ect.

I need:

Storyboards drawn up

A few rough rendered scenes/ characters

A name

Any suggestions feedback, or general inquiries are welcome. If you wish to contribute to the project and have experience in a specific field I would be happy to have the help. biggrin.gif

P.S. Sorry for being vague but am worried about thieves. mad.gif

it's sounds like it's more of a trademark/copyright issue then patent. patent is more for specific technology then simply a story. unless you are creating a unique technology to be used in the game, i would think it's more of a copyright issue.

most people wont steal storyline since there are alot of other storyline out there and they are all pretty similar. it would only be of interest if there are underlying technology involved that has not been used before. for example there have been hybrid technology which combines FPS with RTS genres. there haven't been too many success in that but that doesn't mean someone else cant come along and make it into another mega-title.

generally speaking you need to figure out what kind of intellectual property you are trying to protect and maybe talk to a lawyer specializing in IP protection if you are serious about going further. otherwise, go the way of linux and let the bird fly biggrin.gif

Thanks for contributing. Good point you have there. I believe that the story line I have created is amazing that's the only reason I would be afraid it would be stolen. I'm sure most creators feel "theirs" is the one that is revolutionary, but I truly am invested in its success.

So I guess I could divulge the story line here and receive feed back from ocn gamers before moving onto kick starter....
