Not everyone gets caught however.

But be careful bro...

Suspended for what? It's not like I broke street date or anything. I simply purchased a key and activated it on Steam. People do this all the time, all over the internet. thinking.gif

I purchased a key for Grid for £2.49 the other day. Activated it on Steam. Shouldn't matter where the game is purchased from, I see absolutely no reason why this is a problem other than when people try to circumvent a lock on a game to play it early or if the key is illegitimate.

Steam have already made their money off the keys so how they're obtained, as long as they're obtained legally and not used to gain early access in any way, shouldn't matter.

I've seen many posts over 2 years here in OCN where people whom purchased Russian CD Keys who have activated their product on Steam and when this was figured out their account was suspended. And from the things I see Steam let you do thıs once, but deletes that game from your list. However if done again, you might loose the Steam Account.

I remember one thread perfectly well that a guy's wife bought him a CD key through Ebay, which turned out to be a Russian CD Key and all of a sudden the guy's account was suspended. He went through hell to get it back from Valve. He also had lots of games tied to the account.

Russian CD Keys are one thing, other CD keys are another thing.

You can get the CD keys from greenmangaming or sites like that without any issue, but you can not get Russian CD keys as those keys are meant for Russian users only.

Again. Just be careful. Not like everyone is caught.

Edit : Here is a thread in OCN about the issue

I'm not seeing anything in that thread that denotes the key being from the Russian region as the actual reason for a ban. The users wife bought a key from Ebay.

It's more likely that the key was obtained via illegal methods, like stolen credit cards, hence why it is flagged. As noted in that thread.

With that said I'll be more wary in future, just in case. Better safe than sorry. smile.gif

This is probably the one thing on the Xbox that isn't that bad...for most people. Most people in North America don't want to buy a disk in Hong Kong and load in their console (heh though I did that on the PS1...bought the console there too. It never had any issue with any disk I bought in the United States. It was not region locked some how)

However, I thought they were expecting most of the game purchases to be downloads. Kind of dumb to region lock a console when you sell downloads. With all the bad press going around...I hope this one gets ignored as it is not a big deal

It takes 5 seconds to Google 'Steam account ban VPN proxy'....5 seconds!

There are hundreds of cases of this happening, we don't just make these things up. A popular game that this happened to was COD Modern Warfare 2.

The reasons for locking them are actually pretty obvious, in fact it has already been stated in this thread...some countries have a lower quality of life and a lower GDP compared to first world countries. They cannot afford to pay the amount we pay for games, they would never sell. Games are sold at a lower rate in these countries, and then locked to prevent every man and his dog from paying $30 full price instead of $60. There are a multitude of other reasons too I'm sure.

Just use Google, that's what it's there for. Instead of questioning blatant facts and displaying ignorance.

Fact 1: You cannot directly unlock a region locked game (that does not fall within your region) on Steam.

Fact 2: A VPN is required in order to circumvent these locks, in order to trick Steam into thinking you reside within the applicable region.

Fact 3: Steam will...and do remove games from your list if you're caught. A lot of people didn't even get their games removed with MW2, their account was banned without prior warning and not given back. The official reason was due to the use of a VPN to unlock a region locked game.

Now that we have established the facts, let's stop denying them. If you want proof, see my advice on Google.

What's with you guys?

Are you so blind by hatred that you can't see logic?

This isn't damage control, because there is no damage. If you seriously think this is an issue, you shouldn't be buying any form of media, media as a whole has employed this tactic ever since it entered disc format. If you really think this is a problem, you should not be directing your hatred at Microsoft, you should be directing it any publishers and developers of a multitude of media.

I'm out before I get infractions for insulting you all.

Now explain me why current gen consoles, even portables like the Vita, lack this region control.

AS far as I remember from my past PS3 experience, the games and DLCs are region locked on the Playstation Store. So If you buy and download a DLC for a game you currently have, you must have purchased the game from your own region.

Such as Region 2 DLCs will never work in Region 1.
