Recommend me the "best" Back up PSU

Thread Starter
i have a seasonic 800W psu. thought i was getting it to have zero psu issues but it's been 8 only months and it's acting up. it's gone out twice without warning and decides when it's gonna turn back on. This has happened twice in a month. I am going to rma it but i want to get a backup psu for when i rma it cause i can't wait 2 weeks without my pc. so this thread....

i got the seasonic thinking i wasn't going to have any more power problems but now i've realized even the high end psu's can have issues. i'm not sure how the rma is going to work. my previous 1000W tagan psu was discontinued so i got [newegg] credit and added some cash and got this seasonic 800W. now that the seasonic is failing, i'm thinking given the option, i just want to step down and maybe get 2 psu's. or get a lesser psu and some other part for my next rig.

i'm not sure what i'm gonna lose getting a lesser psu. when i got the seasonic things were very good and i could just buy parts without thinking. i've been there [seasonic] and done that. a little bummed that i spent almost $200 and the psu dies in 8 months. i ran it mostly in hybrid mode. hardly game. (radeon 6970, ssd, 1tb, pci-e x1 usb 3.0, creative audigy pci, all usbs filled up with mouse, keyboard, webcams etc.... )
so anyway... i'd like to get a backup psu while i rma the seasonic. needs to be able to power big cards [6+8 pins]. i have a few psu's but none have the right pins to power my gpu and i can't funtion without my other monitors being on...

the back up psu need not be anything fancy... just a scotty pippen to hold down the fort... something a little nice that if one of my friends need a psu i can sell (or loan) to them so that there's always a backup psu for us to use.

help!

You can just pick up a cheap CX430 (only worth it with the rebate, though) if you only need it as a backup, it will run a single 6970 without issue. Or there's the Rosewill Capstone 450w, which is significantly better built.

The Cosair CX has been removed from the list and is no longer recommended unless you are broke or have no other option

It's still more than sufficient as a backup.... or as a main PSU for that matter. I'm aware of the problems the first rev CX430 had, but IIRC the CX430 rev 2 is fine.

I've been away from this section for a long time...

Corsair CX is a last resort option not something that belongs in a mid or high end PC

Its sort of like putting 50$ car wheels on your lamborghini sure it can drive but its not something you sould do

CX430 isn't sufficient to run something like 6970

With gtx 550 ti and cx 430(my situation), I am able to squeeze some mhz.

you know that cx 430 has only 1 pci-e power connector?

I don't know anything about cars, but if those wheels could perform exactly as advertised then I struggle to see the issue. It's not like the CWT DSA-II platform is ultra low end (not for a 400w, anyway) and they have a pretty low RMA rate aswell. The rig in the OP isn't power hungry. I'd only worry if he was planning on running LinX/Furmark 24/7 with heavy vmods on the card.

Have you used a kill-a-watt meter on your setup? I garuantee you'd barely break ~300w under full load.

Anyway, about the PCI-E connectors...in that case, you may aswell scrap the CX430, then.
