Installed windows 7 now computer wont shut down

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
This is my 2nd build and still quite the newbie. I installed windows 7 OEM 64 bit last night on my SSD and all went well. Updated my drivers starting with the chipset, restarted just fine, then added LAN, audio, USB drivers, went to shut down and my system hung. I let it go for about 20 minutes, then shut down the mains. Nothing else has been done to the system other than loading windows, the drivers mentioned and switching boot device to the SSD.
Ive probably made some sort of noob mistake, rolleyes.gif but dont know what it could be. I have not updated BIos, could that possibly help? Any help would be appreciated

it starts the shut down, then hangs. Any ideas?

I think my next step is to re-seat memory and video card. Maybe related to a driver issue, since it seemed to appear after loading several drives? I havent updated the Bios since the build, but dont want to add another dimension into this yet.

anyone want to take stab at this, may maybe the wrong forum?

I was able to help a win7 PC that had the exact problem, BUT while in safe-mode it shutting down with easy as a normal OS should.
It turned out to be some software that left a handle open and won't let the system shut down.
Have a go at shutting it down in safe-mode first if it is able to shut down cleanly try uninstalling unnecessary programs you might have running at start up smile.gif .

Heres the thing, this is a fresh install, no software whatsoever have been added. I installed windows then updated some drivers, nothing else including bios.
So tonight, I checked the hardware and all seemed to be in order. Tried starting in safe mode which worked as it should, then tried to shut down from windows, no go.
I can re-start from windows and it works as it should, I can shut down from the case using the on/off button. But it hangs when shutting down from windows.

I checked the drivers, and I had the yellow check marks by the following;

Other Devices
-PCI simple communications controller
- Universal serial bus (USB) controller

Computer is not hooked up to internet yet, so not sure which drivers these are. I could try updating to the latest BIOS to see if that makes a difference.

Only USB devices are mouse and keyboard. I updated the BIOS, no joy. I'll start to roll back the drivers that I installed and see if that helps. If not, I guess a re-install of windows.
