[Gamespot] PS4 may include DRM for used games - Report.

Thread Starter
While Sony has already confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will allow consumers to play used games, to date the company has not detailed specifics of how second-hand software or any associated digital rights management (DRM) will be handled. Still unanswered is the question of whether or not players will be required to pay additional fees to activate a previously owned game.

Of course it will, the 3rd party publisher will want uniformity, it wouldn't make sense for them to have it one system, you push it for both and them people are forced to buy new or pay the fee.

Xbone can still technically play used games, they aren't thrown in the trash after a single use, you just have to pay to get in that's why I've taken Sony's answer with a grain of salt.

I just read another report today that they are leaning away from any DRM due to the backlash the Xbox One has received. It is all speculation at this point and should be in rumors.

I don't think DRM is the solution for the problem (being money for used games going to companies like gamestop instead of developers). Everything is going digital, even books for crying out loud. BOOKS!

Why fight and go against the current? I think the smart move is to make sales, as Steam does. Developers gets the money, consumers spend less, gamestop dissappears. Everyone's happy.

While this is the case, a large amount of games are still being sold in stores, and not having that retail presence will hurt sales. With the second hand market gone, or reduced, publishers will get a cut of every sale, and we're more likely to get sales. Things like region locking and day one, retailer exclusive DLC will be gone too.

DLC will not go but you will see more of it. Adding DRM on second hand games will effect a lot of console gamers !

I would imagine something similar to Steam's pre-order incentive would be created if Sony started to heavily invest in pushing digital content.

With DRM on second hand games, we may see a move towards the current PC models, where services like Steam, Origin, and Uplay mean the second hand market is non-existent. The move against the second hand games is intended to be anti-retailer, and not anti-consumer- though that may be a knock-on effect. Retailers actively push used games instead of new games, where the margin is much higher, and the publisher -as a result- the developer don't see any of it. The DRM is being used to gain leverage back from the retailers in this respect.

It's the hat are essentially bullying publishers into providing those day one DLCs, different launch dates accross regions, and identical physical and digital edition pricing. It's the physical retailers that need those extras to differentiate themselves from online retailers and distribution networks like Steam that can offer the game at a cheaper price.

As an example, it was retailers that made ranger mode in Metro: Last Light DLC.

I think this article is fishing, I would think Sony would of said something about fees when they announced it could play used games.
