Would it be worth it to upgrade to a 965be from a 720be with 4th core unlocked?

Thread Starter
I have a 720be with its 4th core unlocked, it seems to be stable at 3.5ghz (30 minutes of prime 95 so far, had been completely stable at 3.4ghz for months) but I can't seem to push it any further. I have been eying the 965be since it seems to be one of the best CPUs that will work with my motherboard (Gigabyte 890gpa-ud3h Rev 2.0) but I really wonder if it will work much better or at least guarantee me a higher overclock than this 720. Unfortunately I can't find a comparison between an overclocked 720be with its 4th core unlocked and an overclocked 965be... So does anyone know if an upgrade would make a significant difference? Should I just wait a few years and get a new CPU and Motherboard?

The most resource intensive thing I do is play games (Everything from Farcry 3 to Galciv 2) and the only thing I have really had trouble playing recently is Nehrim (Very good total conversion for Oblivion, for some reason it runs far worse than Skyrim does with texture packs and a lower end ENB config but I think it ran better with my old 4850...).

Answering quickly would be appreciated as I just noticed that the 965be is on sale for 80$ on newegg (with a code thing) until 29th. Also does that mean the sale will end on the 29th or end at the end of the 29th?

System specs:

Motherboard: 890gpa-ud3h rev 2.0
Video card: ASUS 7870
CPU AMD 720be x4 overclocked at 3.5ghz
RAM: 8gb (4x2gb) gskill ram clocked at 1333mhz
PSU: Seasonic X650
OS: OEM WIndows 7 professional

I have another question that is kind of off topic. If I replace my motherboard while I have an OEM copy of Windows 7 will it invalidate my key like it did with Windows Vista home basic? Can I really just call them and tell them what happened to get a new key instead of buying a new copy of Windows 7?

hello,
no I don't think a 965 over a 720 would impress you, the x6 would be a good buy, its up there with a fx 8.

IMO, you should probably save and go for a bigger upgrade (AM3+ mobo & FX-8320 maybe?) . With the 965BE you are basically looking at +500mhz for $80.

Would be more of a sidegrade, if anything. You would see some benefit, but not $80 worth. I would hold off for a year or so, see what SR looks like. All this being said, the sale ends at 11:59 PM PST on the 29th, fyi. When you do get a new mobo, yes, simply call MS to get a new activation key.

Wow, those 1090ts and 1100ts do look good! I think I will probably go ahead and keep an eye out for one on ebay, I might be able to get one for around the price of that 965be. Do they really tend to go over 4ghz on air cooling (Searches show lots of different "average" overclocks)? I have an old HDT-S1283 to keep it cool with if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the offer but I have been downloading some benchmarking software and am going to compare my scores to the scores from benchmarks. So really don't trouble yourself with it.

Thank you! It's good to know I don't have to buy another copy.

So, now it's just between getting one of those used hexacore processors or waiting until the next generation comes out. Any input would be appreciated.

Im gonna differ with the crowd and say it might not be a bad way to go. Theyre going for a song and dance these days and they overclock pretty well. I wouldn't be surprised to see 3.9 stable out of one. That would be a 500 MHz bump for you and that could translate to some decent performance gains. I don't think it would be "worth it" in terms of dollars to performance but I think it would be a solid bump in performance overall. If nothing else, it would be fun just to have something new to overclock and play with. That's gotta be worth something. wink.gif
