With steam and big picture, HDMi, ITX cases and smaller PC hardware (plus the irony is win 8 makes a good htpc front end) and wireless controllers its getting much less absurd to build your own console

if valve released specs for the steam box a month after the prices settle as a pure gaming machine without endless app's then a lot of people who play on pc now would show a lot of their console friends a different path..

thats if its any good of course. but if their o/s is installable then theoretically you could build one faster than a PS4, Xbone and possibly cheaper

Well .. if this one really comes out at 700 then what would be a smart thing to do would be putting out a ~450 price ITX thingy with half decent GFX card - all in nice black box with Steam logo on it. Couple it with half decent wireless keyboard / mouse / controller and it will pull Wii on that Xbox.
For example:
Mobo 50$ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135323
CPU 65$ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116886
RAM 2x 4 GB 60$ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820814006
500 GB HDD - 55$ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149380
Case+PSU - 65$ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133093
GFX 180$ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161406 (has 3 games coming with it atm)
+ keyboard, mouse, controller and optical drive if you really need to. Might be nice to throw also some USB wifi module into mix or use instead mobo with wifi capability.

Altogehter when ordering from newegg would cost ~475 but I'm sure that if someone would be making that thing in any significant volume he would be able to get a bulk deal to save some money and still do reasonable enough profit on that thing.

That thing could, in essence, be as simple as consoles are. Its some custom Linux distro with Steam big picture mode on top of it so unless you want to you do not need to config anything. Just plug and play. The stats are comparable to XBox One - well at least in that ballpark, probably a bit weaker CPU slightly stronger GPU and ofc, no HSA just the old fashioned CPU + discrete GFX combo.

Zavvi have the Xbox One listed at £399.99 as a place-holder, so it wont cost more than that. It also says that the 30th of November is the release date.

If that isn't a placeholder and is the actual price, then you have to be mental to want to buy that over an Alienware X51 (especially since the X51 is smaller). Assuming you don't have a lot of space and don't know/don't want to learn how to build a computer.

Oh another speculation thread about MS that's negative, let's not use reasoning and continue to bash it!

Seriously, you guys are imbeciles, believing any rumored article that just toots your horn.

Well .. according to google this is still ~600 $ which, in my opinion, is a bit overpriced for a console. In my opinion the console "sweet spot" for entry level model is ~300 $ At that point it would be reasonably more powerful than a similarly priced PC of the same generation and the console maker make their money off the game sales anyway so they do not need to make all that much profit on the hardware.

Not sure about Live Gold- but id expect that price to get a bump- maybe 80 or 100.

Also- the "next-gen" games are gonna cost 80-100 as well - at least judging by the preorders for few of them.

If the price really is this high it certainly would explain why they aren't dropping support for the 360 until 2017 (at leas that's what I've read) .. it may also be a feeler for how much they can really rip us off...

I think everyone forgets that the acutal cost of the console is meager in terms of how long the console and its hardware will be alive until the next gen comes about. Its going to be almost 10 years before they put out another console so, when you think about it, its not that bad. Most of us upgrade our rigs multiple times a year so its hard to knock the console on price too much. I just wish they would upgrade the console like they do the PC. Wouldn't that be awesome if you could take your console to a certified microsoft store like the Apple store to get your upgrades or even bestbuy who had certified technitians? I think thats where they need to go with consoles. I honestly am hesitant about spending more than $400 bucks on a system that i know will be garbade after 3 years.

Microsoft needs to open their own stores and offer upgrades to the console period.

hehe, I remember when that came out.. Boy was that a FAIL! The cartridges (games) were more expensive than the actual console itself lachen.gif

that idea went south pretty quick, was a waste of time and effort by the devs..
