How to build an adiquite HTPC for less than $100

I already have the case and I don't know if I have the ram but the hard drives work: one 120GB and one 250GB the power supply died(an El cheapo one) so I am actually surprised the hard drives work. But yeah I don't want to spend much and it is just for watching DVDs(DVD drive still works too! I just tested it!) and videos off the internet and a flash drive. My current HTPC does not sync up the words with the picture.

if your using VLC switch it to opengl mode in the settings
or use XBMC
had huge problems with HD MKV on VLC with audio getting out of sync with both amd and nvidia cards. it is a VLC problem and changing a few settings can stop it.

Otherwise Pickup a AMD APU.

I am using windows media center and it just does not have enough power.

I was sort of asking for a parts list anyway because I can't seem to get one together for less than $100.

Try using XBMC it is way more efficient
or MPC

If you want a machine that can play 720p/1080p just use you old parts and toss in video card.... or atleast try better software.
what are the old parts?

Video and sound becoming out of sync is purely a videoplayer problem, or source file problem.

All you need is a athlon x2 and any DX10 card to have perfectly fine playback experiance.

Look around on Ebay for an old 775 Xeon. For example, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-3040-1-86-GHz-2M-1066MHZ-Dual-Core-LGA775-CPU-SLAC2-/151051141373?pt=CPUs&hash=item232b5980fd

It's an old weak dual core, but it should be sufficient for playing HD videos. Motherboards and RAM are also quite abundant.

hmm I might try that but it might not work the HTPC in question is a Dell OptiPlex SX270. it is DEFINITELY not DX10. current parts on the one that died are as follows: case, hard drives.

EDIT:I have some ram lying around 2GB ddr3 not in use currently

Netflix HD isn't the best, will need windows 8 Netflix app if you want smooth HD Netflix playback. Though Netflix is switching to HTML5 soon, so that should fix it anyways. Flash works great offloading to the built in GPU, and 1080p MKV files also offload to the GPU perfectly fine.

For your price range this is the best your gonna get. Though AMD jaguar cores should be rolling out soon and will start replacing these boards. Though if you don't want to wait this will still be fine.

Thank you! That should work nicely! Just over 100$. As long as it will play videos smoothly now and into the future I think once I get this stuff put into my old case I will never need to upgrade. That is unless I want to do something new with it in the future.......
