Buying more then needed question

Say my system draws only 400 watts under full load of all components and I have a 850 watt psu will this cause any problems? or do anything weird?

I know it will cost more and everything. but I am wondering will this cause and harm or anything?

Shouldn't harm anything. You could always justify it as having enough power for any other upgrade you want to do (dual cards etc). tongue.gif

Only problem you are going to have is you will be paying more money on your power bill then if you had a lower PSU

Well that depends on the efficiency rating of the PSU. Is it atleast silver rated? it shouldn't be big deal. I have a 910watt 80plus silver for my 2500k and 7970 and I dont notice any higher than usual energy bills.

Actually, he should be paying LESS....

He said he's drawing around 400W at full load. He has an 850W unit.

Most units are in their peak efficiency range between 40 and 70 percent load, and he's right around 45-50.

Furthermore, the temperature of the unit is likely to be very low due to the low draw relative capacity. Lower temps result in increased efficiency.

PSUs do not draw more than the PC tells them to, so you can plug in a quartet of 1850W PSU's to feed an i3-2440 in a Micro ATX motherboard rrunning an HD7750 and a single SSD, and while it would be awesome (because it's insane), the system would not pull more than the 150W it needs,. The only loss would come from the fact that most power supplies are extremely inefficient at 1 percent load lol.

I bought my HALE90 850W, for example, because I know that I will be adding at least one more 670 FTW for SLI and likely a 550Ti or 650Ti for PhysX, and I want to have headroom even after that. I would rather stay below 70 percent load than worry about staying above 40....

400w DC or AC? If it's 400w AC, the actual DC power draw is lower. Also, the typical workload (rather than having the CPU/GPU running at 100%) may be under 300w. So he may achieve the best efficiency at full load; however, it will worse during his idle and typical load thus making him pay more.

Either way, the difference in efficiency isn't that significant. Other than that, there isn't really a negative other than the fact that the higher wattage of the same series will cost more (with the exception of sales and such). There's also an issue that may relate to audible noise from the fan, as a larger capacity PSU may require a faster fan to cool the amount of heat that will be dissipated.
