The 7970GE has perks of it's own that make it better then the 770. We still have yet to see if a 770 can out OC a 7970ghz yet.

Though Nvidia getting a jump on AMD for once is pretty fun to watch. Though gonna wait a couple mounts to see if AMD really is going to release a big die 28nm card.
Though I was eyeing up the gtx780 myself, just not going to get it if the 8970 is blatantly faster.

If the GTX 680 outsells the 7970GE when it is slower and more expensive, what do you think would happen with a cheaper and faster GTX 770?  How low would AMD have to go with a GE, $350?

Sad but true...

The source (GDM.or.jp) mentions pricing between the 40,000 - 56,000 Yen or $399 - $499. The final price would be around $449 for reference and $499 for non-reference models such as the Lightning etc.

Someone in the Nvidia forum posted Australia prices of AUD535 for the 2 GB version and AUD565 for the 4 GB card.  Based on GTX 780 pricing, that would be about $450 and $475 US.

Yeah because the early days of the 7970 went so well in general? AMD's poor Drivers for the first year defiantly had something to do with it, though not the only thing.
Nvidia has perks like Physx and tends to have solid drivers. Plus people like the name for some reason, though AMD is a bigger company making more chips then Nvidia by a good amount.

If anything 7970's sales picked up more in its later years as the valve increased.

AMD would have no problem going up against a 770 when the 7970ghz is the same price offering back and forth performance. For those with 1080p monitor and don't really care about using that much AA then the GTX770 would probably be the way to go, though if your running 1440p I wouldn't get anything less the the 7970/50 or gtx780.

If this turns out to be true, I guess I had a "Called it!" moment yesterday. biggrin.gif I still think that a 2 GB card is not a wise investment looking into the future. I thought it was a bit lacking a year ago when they launched the GTX 600 series, it's getting even more true as time passes, especially more than a year after. They really have to play with price. I mean, 2 GB of VRAM is so mainstream that they officially released cards with that amount all the way down to the GTX 650 Ti Boost to compete with AMD's mainstream offerings. I doesn't make any sense for a GTX 770 to come with 2 GB of VRAM in June of 2013, when AMD's high end cards have had that amount since the launch of the HD 7900 series early last year.

The 7970 is more well prepared for the present, let alone the future, and with the GTX 770 having the cores and memory running faster and the TDP at a rumoured 220w+ Nvidia can't really boast much about power efficiency, even if it will still use less power than the HD 7970, but then again the Radeon has more compute power.

The only saving grace for this card is if it launches at $ 350, $ 400 max. That would leave a big gap between that and the GTX 780, and I suspect that Nvidia will do exactly this and then launch a GTX 775, with around 2000 CUDA cores, based on GK110. And if the rumours about the new AMD cards are right, AMD will do the same, as the top of the line chip is apparently only used for that card and the second best card is much less expensive, opening the door for a harvested part based on the higher end chip in the middle after the initial cards release.

AMD needs to release a new flagship GPU soon. They can't just keep slashing 7970 prices all the time (though that would be sweet) biggrin.gif
