1) which website are you looking at? These are 1500 rpm, 61cfm, 1.516mm h20 @ less than 20db.

2)how would you consider that bad performance? Gentle typhoons are a popular choice on rads, the 1450rpm versions only push out 50cfm and 1.326mmh20. yes if you get the 1850 or 2150 rpm versions they're going to have more, but at the cost of noise. the xigmateks are virtually silent.

First, rads don't work well when sandwiched. I tried, with a pair of Swiftech MCR320QP rads and 9x Koolance 120x38mm 4krpm fans (171cfm/20.4mmH2O) in a fans-rad-fans-rad-fans setup and I saw an average drop of 0.4C in the Delta-T. Not worth it.

Second, while I personally think that the Gentle Typhoon fans are overrated and overhyped, I will say that they are one of very few whose spec's can be taken as actual performance. Xigmatek and most others are not going to perform anywhere near what the box says, because they inflate numbers using all kinds of testing tricks.

The fans I recommend, from personal experience and testing (and I've owned countless fans), aside from expensive but ideal Sanyo Denkei/Delta/Panaflo/Nidec,are:
KKOOLANCE 120X38MM + 120X25MM 2600RPM
BGEARS BLASTERS 140MM
SWIFTECH HELIX/HELIX PWM
COUGAR PWM

The above fans all either meet or exceed their rated specs.

To give you an example of how bad the Xigmatek are, a different model of theirs rated at 90cfm/2.1mmH2O lost 80 percent of its airflow with the addition of nothing more than a single layer low density fan filter.

For radiators, don't look at Cfm, it's not important... The static pressure is the critical spec, and I would never recommend anything that has less than around 2mmH2O of ACTUAL static pressure, and ideally a minimum of 3mmH2O.

To figure out how much you need for a given radiator, take the fin count. For 0-10fpi, 2mmH2O minimum. 11-20fpi, 3.5mmH2O minimum, and anything denser, and I say no less than 4.5-5mmH2O.

Also, for case fans, static pressure is more important than CFM. For example, don't ever waste your money on the Corsair AF fans, get the SP120PE instead. They will actually have around 50-200 percent more airflow depending on the restrictions. To give an example, the integrated fan grill on case exhaust fan mounts? That's going to block around HALF of a fans airflow, so a fan with low static pressure will lose almost all its airflow.

Really? That's a bit pants. Dam advertising puff. I've got 2 in push/pull on a modified antec kuhler 620 and they cope fine with my cpu @4.3 and don't go much over 70% of the fan speed (1235rpm accoring to fan xpert2).

I've actually got 9 of the buggers that will (or maybe were) going into the case mod i'm doing. 6 of them to be strapped to the 3 alphacool st30 240mm i've got, the other 3 for intakes. Those rads have about 14fpi but are quite thin and won't have much restricting the airflow before or after them. One of the 240 rads will do cpu and 2 will do gpu so should be ok. lol

Looking at those fans you suggested they all seem to be fairly noisy (around 30db). Are there any quiet fans you can recommend. Or are you more persuaded by outright performance and care not for quietness?

I would like to see some tests performed with some properly high static pressure fans (Like the Delta 252 fans) with low FPI radiators. Then measure the CFM at the exit of the rads, and compare that to two separate rads with the same CFM on the rads exit.

Those tests are inconclusive at best, but to tell us that under normal circumstances it is highly impractical.

And testing every configuration is highly impractical...

If you want more data then I would suggest looking at specific configurations around the site.

In the OPs case he's just going to have to try it. Mixing fans and rads in a sandwich is just odd and kind of pointless IMO.

And San Ace/Delta + High FPI ftw

I had a good read of Martins radiator sandwich review and scrapped that idea, its a shame though it would have been good fun to put together.

The new plan is to get myself a decent water cooling loop as soon as I have the money, I had a look at the XSPC kits but I know I would just upgrade the first chance I got once I had it figured out.

I'm still looking to put the Corsair H100 onto my GPU seeing as I still haven't read anything about a compatible water block for the Sapphire 7970 I want.

Problem is I cant think of a viable position for the H100 without mutilating my case, mounting it externally isn't an option either as it is a closed loop system and I cant remove the tubing to thread it through some of the case holes they provide you for liquid cooling. Any ideas?

The two ideas i'm currently playing around with are to lie the radiator/fans down in the bottom of my case in front of the PSU, there is half a mesh section for intake and i could make holes in the uppermost front half below the hard drive mounting racks and use it in an exhaust configuration, with of course some padding to prevent vibrations and noise.

Or

To remove the current 2X240mm exhaust fans I have in the top of the case which in the Thermaltake Chaser MK-1 are covered by a top plate which is easily removed and have the H100 as a case exhaust as well as GPU cooler, most likely put some much better fans on it than the stock depending on temps inside the case. Although I highly doubt the standard tubes are long enough for this.

When positioning these fan configurations how much emphasis should I be placing upon a tradition concurrent airflow pattern such as air intake at the bottom front and top rear exhaust? Does it have a negative effect or is it reasonable to direct fans anywhere that may require cooling?

haha yeah not quite conventional and a complete waste of time but its something to play around with and it'll save me X amount of dollars for the mean time until there is a compatible full cover water block for the Sapphire 7970.

Why not just get another AIO cooler to put on your gpu? it's easily done with a few zip ties and would be significantly cheaper. you could get a thick 120mm one like the antec 920, attach it to the front of your case and your away!

Because a custom setup will always outperform AIO? And multiple AIO setups get's really messy, and a legit cooling loop would save case clutter?

Oh yeh it'd outperform it easily. But going on the fact the OP was reluctant to getting rid of the H100 i thought i'd offer a cheaper alternative. I would say though the AIO are less messy than custom loops.
