same, have you heard of own cloud?

it would be fairly easy if your into servers to rig two family own cloud servers to sync and share and still keep your own backups private

Most non-commercial data is stuff that people are willing (and eager) to share, and things like MEGA are the only way that's gonna happen without actually hosting your own server, which is apparently not even allowed by most ISPs, if I'm to believe the news around here. If you're gonna harp on the whole pirating thing then do it, you don't need to get people all paranoid about their game mods and amateur photography albums being in a place that could possibly be compromised. As far as I'm concerned many corporations would love to get user content completely out of the reach of everyone and turn the whole internet into a giant vending machine for their 'wares. Do the more naive among us a favor and stop playing into their hands.

And anyway the term "cloud" is barely applicable to this type of company. Off-site data storage has been around since before the buzzword ever got started.

Lol, this.

I use Google Drive because it comes with GMail, and I only use it to sync my schoolwork. Still I have two offline backups, one on my desktop and the other on the pendrive.

It has already failed once and it crapped out most of the files... Thankfully the pendrive backup was up to date.

The Cloud is very cool and all, but unless your service is managed by yourself, you are reliant on a corporation. And that's not good.

The Cloud is very cool and all, but unless your service is managed by yourself, you are reliant on a corporation. And that's not good.

But there's like, Idk, throw a number out there... how many corporations? How many free services anyway? How many free encrypted services?

I think you understand that the number I'm aiming for here is _morethan1

so if it's down to backup and sharing then there's no reason to rely on any one thing. Of course. I think it is important for the nerds to keep campaigning this, in an effort to help their customer service buddies. But you know, you're not going to be 100% safe EVAH and more copies means everybody wins. For as long as we're allowed to keep what we want to ourselves, you will be much safer not giving CHOICE over what gets shared, and what doesn't, away.

so when all is said and done, how many bilions will us have to pay to kim dotcom, as they shut down a business that generated over 100m netto income yearly?

funny thing is they could have done it legally but they rushed things and its a trainwreck

Who's "us" and why would this group have to pay Kim Dotcom?

because the entire shutdown of megaupload was illegal. they could have done it legally by the book, but they rushed the things and they did not. New Zealand police/DOJ did everything wrong that they could. US had no jurisdiction to shut down the company either, surveillance by New Zealand police was obtained illegally and they knew it, and they are now trying to rewrite laws in US so they can serve company that had no legal presence in US

its just one big mess. so yes a company producing 100m netto yearly income was destroyed illegally and when all is said and done, someone will have to pay damages

Please. This is the U S of A. We get to shut down anyone we want and imprison whoever we want for no reason, and even when we get stopped there's no penalty - we don't even have to say 'sorry'!
