Need help picking a new smartphone from Verizon

I'm in desperate need of a new phone. I'm currently running on an LG Versa that's 4 years old or more. I've been going back and forth between 3 phones, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm looking for a smartphone that is SMALL, has plenty of functionality, and most importantly, I do not want problems. My brother owns a Samsung Galaxy S4 which is extremely nice, but I'm really turned off by these gigantic phones because it feels like I'm holding a brick to my head when I'm talking on them, and I like going corner to corner on my phones with just my thumb, which these 5 inch plus screens are too big for me to do that on.

The 3 phones I've been debating between are:
- Droid Razr M (which is free)
- iPhone 4S ($50 @ bestbuy)
- iPhone 5 ($150 @ bestbuy)

Every time I feel like I've made up my mind on one of those phones, I find something that changes my opinion.

I've heard of major data usage issues with iPhone 5's, being that they can use up to 10 times the data as other phones when people are doing nothing different with their phones, caused from some major data leak or something else, and it seems to be widespread enough that it's easy to find tons of threads on it by simply googling it. Also problems such as terrible signal and wi-fi that goes in and out at random.

Haven't heard too many problems from the 4S other than the random dud and common hardware problems that may arise after a while. There could be some major issue with this phone I'm missing, but I'm not sure because it's my least researched of the 3 phones (since it's older and on the bottom of my list).

As for the droid razr m, I've heard things ranging from non-existant battery life, to terrible call quality or calls dropping (most common issue), to the phone just not functioning properly and is also the worst rated of the 3 phones.

I'm really at a loss as to what to get. The iPhone 5 seems to have the most positive reviews, but I'm extremely worried about the data issues since going over will cost you an arm and a leg, and the Razr M is the most appealing to me because of the price (FREE!) and because almost everyone has told me to get Android over iOS. Someone help me frown.gif

I didn't even read most of your post but I'd go with the Razr M firstly because it's free and it's a great phone and secondly because the 4G radio in the Razr are much stronger than the iPhone 5 radio in my experience. For me the signal strength will win out in any decision making. I hate having a 4G smartphone in my hand that constantly says 3G...

iphone 5 wont use more data really than iphone 4s
Besides what is your data pool going to be? 1GB?? 2GB??

If you manage your phone properly by using wifi only for data usage, you shouldn't ever have to worry about going over 1GB

my mother basically only uses Data on her iphone when she's imessaging people, or checking her email in the morning.
Web browsing and what not she's always using wifi.
She has a 2GB limit but she avgs like 300megabytes a month.

i myself use an S3 and i find its great. I have large hands so that's prob why i feel it "fits" perfectly.
i actually wanted a note 2 for a while, but now im just sitting and waiting for the HTC One to finally release on verizon.

I've heard of tons of people having data leak issues with iPhone 5's, that's what I'm talking about. Type it into google once and a ton of threads and forums will pop up, with people saying their iPhone used like 1GB overnight while they were asleep and while it was supposedly on a wi-fi network. That's my biggest concern.

Apple released an update for the data usage and AT&T had more problems with it than verizon so you should be fine if you want to buy it.

How much do you use your phone and what do you do with it? The razr m might be fine for you.

i can only advise how my mom used it, i got her the 5 on launch.
i dont think she's updated the software ever lol...and she doesn't have these data leaks.

I'd also wonder why people aren't using home wifi when they're sleeping.

That's the thing. They were on wi-fi, but for some people the wi-fi was extremely spotty and cut in and out all the time even though other peoples phones were perfectly fine, or it was on wi-fi but also used 4G or 3G. There are literally hundreds of threads/forums talking about this, but it only seems to effect <10% of all iPhone.

For everyone that still do not understand:

we.. apparently 6.1.2 supposedly patched this
easiest thing to do is turnon airplane mode when u sleep, and enable wifi and cell network only, thus disabling mobile data.
