No harddrives detected

Hi,

Today my sister-in-law brought her laptop to me saying it didn't boot up anymore. After a couple of reboots I finally managed to get into the windows installation but it says there are no stations found.

Is this the cause of a dead harddrive or is there more going on? Could I just put in another harddrive to get the issue solved?

Here is a pic of what it is saying. http://imgur.com/h0IR7PZ

Thanks,

EDIT : The pc stays in black screen while booting

That looks like a loose drive. (wouldn't happen to be an acer would it? My old 5742 did that out of the box and a simple reseat fixed it). Try reseating the drive.

If reseating does not fix it, inspect the drive for physical damage. Also check that it does not rattle when in your hand. If you see or hear damage, replace the drive. If it looks good then move on.

Assuming no physical damage, then take note of the manufacturer of the drive, likely WD, Toshiba, Hatachi or Seagate. Also note if it is SATA or ATA133 (IDE). Report back and we can link you to the proper diagnostic program for your drive.

Thanks alot for the answers. Actually the laptop is a DELL INSPIRON 1564.

The drive is SATA from Seagate momentus 5400.6. I removed it and it's not ratteling.

Does this mean the drive is dead?

Not yet. There is still a chance of having other issues.

Try testing the drive with seatools DOS version. You should be able to use freedos to run it. Would also suggest replacing it anyway,

What I mean is: is the drive dead? Or is there any other issue with the pc?

Check if the drive shows up in the BIOS. If it does, then there is hope that it is a drive/OS/driver issue only. If not, then there is a chance it could be the chipset, or SATA connector, or motherboard damage. or a bad drive. THe only way to tell here would be to get a known good drive and check using that.
