GTX780 vram

Thread Starter
Hey

I'm planning on upgrading my aging GTX580 to a 780 soon (probably an EVGA with ACX). The price is fine if it's gonna keep me going for 2 years like my 580 did; the only thing I'm worried about is the 3GB vram.

I know it's plenty for 1080p, and it should still be enough when I make the jump to 1440p with the current generation of games, but with the PS4 launching with 8GB of shared GDDR5 it has me worried about the future a bit. As it stands my Skyrim installation with all my mods is unplayable on my 1.5GB 580, I've seen it jump up above 2.5GB on a friend's computer and that's a game that's gonna be 2 years old soon as well...

I may just be paranoid, but when I bought the 580 everyone told me that 1GB was plenty for 1080p, but that was far from the case, and I don't want to waste €700 on something that won't be plenty for at least 2 years.

Also, if 3GB might become a problem over the next 2 years, do you guys think we'll eventually see 780s with more vram? Jacob over at the EVGA forums mentioned that a 6GB version isn't in the pipeline at the moment, and I can't see nvidia agreeing to that either way; but perhaps a 4.5GB version?

Thanks in advance. smile.gif

Of course running a game with mods will take more vram, but it will run any vanilla game on 3GB vram,

Your guess is as good as ours probably. If it's any correlation I currently play on a 1440p w a 2gb card just fine, but no texture modded games. If it's a concern, is getting 1 or 2 GTX 680 4gb's out of the question? I do think the 780's at 3gb is pretty comfortable though.

You may see more vram but not 6gb. Jacob said 6gb was limited to the Titan

I think 3GB is fine for 1440p. Of course it is hard to tell what the future holds. I myself am upgrading soon as well as 1.25GB just does not cut it.
