At a dead end - Need advice

Good morning OCN biggrin.gif

Bottom line up front: I need to upgrade my computer soon. I am becoming very disappointed in my laptop's ability to play newer games. It started giving me issues playing games at the lowest graphics around the release of Borderlands 2 and now games that I want to play (Planetside 2, COD: Black Ops 2, the new Splinter Cell game, etc.) laugh at my GPU as I try and install them.

I am one of those guys that buys something and uses it until it is unusable (Exhibit A: my one pair of shoes I have had since the summer of 2010). This laptop is about as used up as a laptop can get. I think for the quality of the parts inside this computer that I stretched it out to its limits multiple times. The following links are two benchmarks done comparing my computer's processor and graphics card to mid-high tier GPU/CPUs.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-2410M+%40+2.30GHz
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GT+520M

To be honest, I am still satisfied with this computer's processing ability. Unfortunately, I can't upgrade my laptop's graphics card and I am pretty sure that fiance's new Galaxy S4 could score a better benchmark than my 520M (I am actually interested to see if this is true).

This next part I wrote was long-winded and pointless. You guys already know my options on the market right now. Basically, I am looking for your opinions of what I should do this summer/fall. I am thinking that I should just suck this laptop's extremely sub-par GPU up and just keep saving for the perfect time to jump back into the market. I just have to hope that that time to jump back in isn't over a year down the road... I have been getting the BSOD on this laptop recently during start-up and I am not sure how much longer it can take it. Advice?

Not entirely sure what you want..... laptop, desktop? if so what's your budget. As for waiting well if your current machine is not running what you want at acceptable settings then now is likely the time to get new.

Sorry I didn't specify. I don't really have a budget, but I would like to spend less than $2000 including all my water cooling supplies. And I don't want a Laptop anymore. They are designed to get outdated in a year or two and I don't want that. Desktop all the way.

I assumed you needed a monitor. I left out the case and watercooling so the above totals $1327 which should leave plenty for case, cooling and any other odds n sods you need.

Do you actually need watercooling though? Do you plan to push things that hard? If not toss a good air cooler on the CPU and save a pile of cash.

Thanks! No, I wouldn't need a water cooling set-up for that rig. I was hoping to try out a Crossfire/SLI set-up but it is looking more and more likely that I will use something that is effective, cheap, and easily cooled by air. I appreciate your advice though. Anyone else?

P.S. Is that you in your profile picture? Iraq or Afghanistan?

If you don't watercool there's enough in that 2k budget to crossfire a 2nd GPU though on a single monitor it may be a waste and 3 monitors would push you overbudget a little
