Need some guidance in repairing Das Keyboard!

Asked for help on /r/mechanicalkeyboards but it didn't gain much traction so now I'm helping asking the wonderful OCN community for help!

So about a week or so ago I noticed that a bunch of keys on my Das Ultimate S stopped working. I had no idea what was wrong so I started to troubleshoot. Unplugged the USB, restarted the computer, etc. Suddenly I noticed that it worked again without me really having to do anything. Eventually the problem came back, I got frustrated and shoved my keyboard. Somehow that actually did the trick and then it hit me, there was a break in the cord and moving the keyboard around just reconnected the break. I located the source to the nub that is actually connects to the keyboard. I have no idea how this happened because I don't put that much stress on the cord and the keyboard rarely leaves the table. It's getting worse and worse to the point where keys disconnect (especially the "y, h, n, m,j u" keys) multiple times every day. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience in trying to repair problems like this. Would it be really simple where I can try to disassemble the keyboard, cut the nub and area where the break is, and resolder the wire? I have soldered before, not really great at it and it would end up being ugly but it's better than paying the $70 repair + shipping fee to return it to Das!

TLDR: Das Ultimate S (2011) malfunctions with some keys not responding. Narrowed the issue down to the cord, and the area is the nub/part that goes into the keyboard. Wondering if anyone has issues with their keyboard doing this as well and if it's an easy fix for someone that has a soldering iron but never really used it for anything complicated.

Thanks everyone thumb.gif

If it's just the cord, it's a simple quick fix. Cut, and resolder. Head over to geekhack if you're more adventurous and you can find some guides for making the cable detachable.

USB is just 4 wires. Cut it and have a look to see what's going on. Might also be the contacts on the keyboard side, too, so, before you cut it, you might want to pop the cover off the das and have a look on that end.

This particular keyboard has a USB hub as well, but I'm guessing when I cut and strip the cord I should have no problem matching the wires back together to resolder right? I think I'm going to have to pop the cover off the keyboard anyways because it seems like the part that's messing up is right where it goes into the keyboard.

Thanks for the reassurance... I usually just solder simple stuff and more for cars and automotive so I didn't want to cut/strip the wire and then not be able to reconnect it.

Thanks for the picture and help! I was debating on actually doing the detachable cable mod and even looked up the Noppoo Choc thread. I found the area that was giving me problems, somehow the cable was pinched at a weird angle. I peeled off some of the outter layer to see what was going on inside and to my surprise there are 10 wires. I can probably fix my problem by just cutting the wires and soldering by matching the colors but I kind of want to give the detachable USB cable a shot. I was going to use two mini USB slots and have two plugs at the back of my keyboard (one for the HUB and one for the keyboard) but since there are 10 wires total instead of 8, it makes me kind of confused on how I would approach this. I tried to look things up but it seems a little hard to find people opening up their Das keyboards and doing this mod.

Does anyone have any idea what I do with the extra wires? I'll post a picture of the end plug to show what I'm talking about.

Das has a built-in USB hub, right?

That's probably what the other wires are there for.
