Worthwhile upgrade?

Thread Starter
So, I am looking to upgrade from a intel q6600 @3.6ghz and intel d975xbx2 motherboard. I feel like they have been bottlenecking my amd 5970 pretty hard, only like 30 fps on the gta4 benchmark with no aa/af and detail and draw distance at 50.

I am looking at the intel i5 3750k and ASUS P8Z77-V LE PLUS LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard. I think this should resolve the issue, and boost performance substantially. So I was wondering, what kind of increase do y'all expect from this, and is it worth the money? also, do y'all think i could get any money out of my old stuff, and if i can buy the other stuff used.

Thanks,
Caleb Bridwell

deffo bottlenecking. that is a great core setup, yes you can find those parts or similar used, I would buy mobo new they are inexpensive and delicate. saving $30 is not worth warranty/return/RMA and risk of buying dead hardware.

if you get a 3750k and OC it lightly it will feed any single GPU setup without bottlenecking your card afaik, provided you pair it with a good mobo. performance will be VERY noticeable improvement.

see this thread (WIP)
-Guide- Selecting parts for a PC

dunno on old hardware, sum1 will tell u if its worth something. $100 as a computer that works, probably. more? don't know.

Alright, thanks. Well, my 5970 is a dual gpu card. So hopefully the i5 could keep up. Also, i hear they have awesome oc headroom. Definitely more than my old quad here.

you may want to consider this board,,just because the extra heatsink,,it will run cooler and last longer

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131820

do you have a decent cooler for the 3570k

I know you'll be happy with the performance,,,its a quick chip,,easily overclocked,,and not that hot,,,hyper 212+ or better,,,loves GTA 4

I turned my old RIG into a media center for my home theatre

Right now I am looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103176 also, only get around 27 fps in skyrim in the bigger cities. That is with no aa/af. It is obnoxious. I will consider that one, the reason I'm looking at this one is that it is a bundle deal with the cpu and cooler, so it is cheaper.

I think the 3750K uses the LGA 1515 socket.

If you want to use the LGA 1155 socket you might want to get a 3570K instead.

I actually meant the 3570k. My bad, typo. Like i said, i have been out for a while. This is the newest generation, right?

I know, I was joking wink.gif

Depends on your definition of "newest generation"

Yes, it's the newest chip currently out there, but haswell is coming in few weeks.

Although.. haswell's main improvements are power consumption / battery life, which for a desktop PC.. who cares? Unless saving a few bucks / year in energy is meaningful to you.

Well I think I can do without a few cents taken off my energy bill tongue.gif I may just wait for them to come out so these will drop in price though... hmmmm.

So does anyone know if the q6600 and motherboard I have now can sell and a price idea?
There's not going to be any price drop unless you buy a used one.

Intel doesn't really lower the prices of their old chips when a new one's released.
