Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X Overclock Suggestions

Thread Starter
I'm overclocking my card again and am looking for suggestions from fellow 7950 or vapor-x owners as fare as any tips I might find useful.
I have a Sapphire 7950 (Dual X cooler) OC edition and I suggest you use MSI Afterburner for OCing. I find it to be the easiest and very robust when OCing either for 24/7 or bench marking.

I tried using Trixx (Sapphire software) but it's very limited compared to MSI AB. If you really want to push your card and tweak voltages (as long as your card is unlocked) you can also do it via MSI AB; though this will entail tweaking a .cfg file here and there.

I use Trixx myself, set the power slider to 20% and go to town. I am running 1100/1500 with stock voltage of 1.25

I use MSI afterburner -I ran into probs using the different versions of trixx, but also am using amd 13.5 drivers now
and have not tried trixx, I got slight performance increase going to 13.4 and now 13.5 drivers.
With afterburner I set my voltage 1.250 and my mem voltage at 1.5, my 24/7 oc is 1190/1500.
settings are forced voltage, unlock voltage control and monitor voltage. also have powerplay enabled with extended settings.
And I use the cutom fan settings, but never in my set up do my fans get over %70 unless I do it my self, and my #1 vrm and #2 vrm
never get above 60c, my core also maxes at 61c.

One thing I found out through testing, is my mem voltage would be at 1.6v I could get up to 1450.
after a lot of messing around, I desided to lower voltage, and for some reason I can get 1500 at 1.5 volts, but only 1450 at 1.6 volts on mem.
So make sure you try messing a few times with the settings, also with mine it doesn't matter if I have the boost on or off on the card.
I think its a fantastic card, it handles everything I through at it with no probs at all.

Oh ya power setting at %20i have no throttleing.

Ok. well I just installed the new beta for afterburner b/c the normal one was causing weird artifacts, I'm going to move up my clock, but I'm currently at stock voltage with a core clock of 1050. thumb.gif

Also, would you guys mind posting your 3dmark scores up so I could see what you're getting with your setups.

Thanks,

Brett

Edit: Would you also recommend forcing voltage?

I don't use forced voltage, never had an issue.

Ok, I'm still working on getting a stable clock, but I'll let you guys know what I manage to finish out with
post #8 of 19
Brett, oc the core first. AB will let you go all the way to 1100. keep the vram at stock and do some testing. if you encounter any issues - bump the voltage up a tad. i just go up like to 1.2 or something.

do the same with the vram but set the core back to stock. AB will let you set this all the way up to 1575 as you can see.

also, make sure you set the fan speed higher if temps are going over 80C. i use HwInfo64 to monitor temps of both core and vrms.

I currently have the limiter turned off, thanks for the advice, would you recommend that I use 3dmark 11 for benchmarking? Other than that I have several games that should work well for testing.
3D mark benchmarks are fine. Vantage put my temps really high. I would highly recommend the games you play for testing. Yes, set the Power to 20%. Keep all your temps below 80C or even lower to compensate for even warmer weather.

i never oc my gpus just for games. i had my thuban at 4GHz and the 7970 at stock one time and it plays all my games maxed ( i mean maxed) except C3. at 1050 - 1075 core your gpu should perform like a 7970. here is a stock 7970 . . .
