While not out of the realm of possibility, I would be very surprised if your board, and most all 800 series boards, could boot up SR when it comes out. However before running out to buy a new 990FX mobo, keep in mind that AM3+ will soldier on through at least SR. After that I could very well see AMD merging AM3+ and FM2, so that 990FXmobo *could* only last one generation, if a socket merge does indeed occur. If I were you, I would wait to get more info on SR specs. If you're really pressed for a CPU upgrade in the meantime, get a nice 720 or 740 BE, even a 960T, and unlock and overclock away. They won't be a 6300, but they'll be close enough most of the time, and cost 1/3 of the price.

So far I have 3 people who are saying SR won't work with 800 series boards, and nobody saying yes/maybe/probably. While this is unfortunate, I appreciate the advice. If anyone else feels like contributing and stating a reason why it will/might/likely work, then that'd be nice. Aside from the improvements, I would really prefer SR since the new consoles will be SR based and any optimizations for those consoles will likely affect my system as well. But, I understand why I shouldn't keep my hopes up.

correct me if I'm wrong but didn't piledriver "recommend" 900 series board to run it? so I don't think it will be updated specially if it didn't get an update for PD

but you never know as someone said be prepared to switch sadly this won't be known for sure unless amd releases the info or SR comes out XD

yea and the apu series recommends the 85x chip set but yet it works fine with a55m. Richland recommends the a85x to but yet my a55m received a Richland update basically they just recommend the highest thing so you spend more money lol.

Well to be fair, the newer chipsets (on AM3+ anyway) offer a few more features, and they're likely what AMD does all their testing on.

But see, these things that both you and anistii have said are exactly why I asked this question in the first place - there's still a decent possibility that SR will work on 800 series boards without a BIOS update, but what throws me off is how AMD doesn't mention the 800 series at all, and the fact that SR is architecturally different than BD and PD (like I said, PD is basically just an improved BD, it isn't very different architecturally).

well to be honest i dont see the reason why not to upgrade ? well beside the money,
you'll get better performance with 900s and backward compatibility with what you have now (AM3) and with SR AM3v2 (AM3+ ).

My board now is pretty nice, and the fact that I can use AM3+ processors at all is something I'd like to take advantage of before I move on. Considering SR is likely going to be the last AM3+ CPU, I'd rather not get a brand new board for an end-of-the-line product - I'd rather keep my board now and go for a 6300. When it comes time to make a new build, I'm going to wait until a DDR4 CPU is available.

As for performance loss, I get the impression that the only downsides to the 800 series vs 900 is an older version of HT, missing power saving features, and no turbo mode - none of which I would be affected by since I intend to overclock (The new HT doesn't appear to have an impact anyway). I have yet to hear that PD runs noticeably slower on an 800 board, but I'd like to be proven otherwise. But as usual, just because BD/PD don't have issues, it doesn't mean SR won't.

If I go for a new AMD build I'm going to wait for AM4 or whatever their new socket will be.

Upgrade your board for good reasons:
1. You will never run steamroller on it and probably not Vishera. You were lucky to run bulldozeron it. Oh you never ried bulldozer on it. Forget it!
2. You will have improved phase control on your VRM's with a 990 FX chipset motherboard. Go for a board with 8x2 phase control unless you have no intention to overclock.. You can get Gigabyte UD3 board for as little as $139.99.
