Kaveri is an APU that is based on SR. SR itself I believe is still AM3+ based. However, if I happen to be wrong, that makes deciding to go for the 6300 an even easier choice.

^ This, there will be a steamroller based server Opteron chips too according to AMD official roadmap.

Kaveri simply utilizes SR cores, it doesn't mean SR is going to be exclusively FM2+. Multiple outlets have confirmed that AM3+ will continue through *at least* SR. I personally don't see AM3+ lasting beyond that. I think AMD's progression with HSA, hUMA, and DDR4 will necessitate a unified socket by the time Excavator comes to market. I also wouldn't expect SR until 4th quarter 2013/1st quarter 2014.

Ya, unofficially AMD has stated that Steamroller FX series CPUs will be available for Socket AM3+. Though it's not a certainty that will come to fruition or that Steamroller might require a yet to be announced 1000 series AMD AM3+ chipset. Though the latter seems quite unlikely given that AMD has chosen to stick with AM3+ for the selling point of CPU upgrade-ability (unlike Intel).

IIRC from my research, SR will be AM3+ compatible (it might be the last AM3+ CPU) and it will be compatible with the 900 and 1000 series chipsets. While no sources said it is 800 compatible, nobody said it is incompatible either, hence the reason for me posting this question.

I would assume that if your mobo maker is still producing BIOS updates and the board is officially a Socket AM3+ that it will work with Steamroller. The differences between the 800 and 900 are quite small, IIRC.

Well, not only do I not have a AM3+ socket (just plain AM3) but I'm using a beta BIOS that Gigabyte doesn't give away to just anybody. This was the 2nd reason for me posting this question - if SR happens to be 800 compatible, I also wanted to know if it required a BIOS update. PD doesn't appear to need it, which is what inspired me.

Steamroller for the desktop will use AM3+, it's already been confirmed. That roadmap is for Kaveri, which is a FM2+ product that will use SR cores in the same way that Trinity uses Piledriver cores but runs on FM2. That roadmap only runs through 2013, and the "performance" Steamroller for the desktop, for AM3+, arrives in early 2014.

As for the OP, it seems like you have already made up your mind to try to run Piledriver on an unsupported board, so go for it. There's a pretty good chance it will work. But don't count on being able to use the Bulldozer BIOS to run a Steamroller later on. Piledriver is basically a Bulldozer with some much-needed tweaks, but Steamroller is a pretty significant revision of the FX architecture. A Bulldozer BIOS probably won't be able to initialize it.

Isn't the 900 series chipset basically a rebrand of 800?

Thanks for the clarifications, and I agree.

@TheRic89
No, the 900 series supports SLi, some new power features, I think a new version of HT, and probably a few other FX-specific things I'm forgetting about. But aside from those things, it is pretty much identical to 800.
