Upgrade to high end air

post #1 of 29
Thread Starter
I'm planning on changing CPU whenever the new AMD range comes out, and my currently push/pull CM Hyper is struggling under moderate/high overclocks so i was wondering what was the best cooling solution for up to/around 100GBP.

Now as far as i understand for around that price point you're looking at;
Phanteks PH-TC14PE twin stack air, or a Corsair H100 closed loop and i know there are varied sites praising each with many saying "get a Phanteks as on high it sounds like a H100 on low" but with the obvious downside on space. Now i'm not too worried about the space side of it as my HAF XB takes my Hyper no problem with 20-30mm spare on top and front to back will be fine after my ram change. I was thinking, and would consider though if there were any single stacks that would perform similarly without taking up a huge amount of room. Ones i've been checking out are: NZXT Havik 140, Venomous X, Xigmatek Aegir or a Xigmatek Dark Knight.

Just wondering if there are any air aficionado's here that can help, any comments appreciated thumb.gif

As you stated, Phanteks PH-TC14PE (if you can fit it ,why not) ~ £70 but Silver Arrow SB-E is cheaper at £55 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermalright-Silver-Arrow-SB-E-Cooler/dp/B007BO0VEI/ or £61.25 for black and white http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermalright-Silver-Arrow-SB-E-SE/dp/B009R41N06/

You ought to be looking at Thermalright or Noctua for single towers:
Noctua NH-U14S
Thermalright Archon SB-E (almost as pricey as the Noctua)
£57 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermalright-Archon-SB-E-X2-Fan/dp/B00ADTOKPO/
Thermalright True140 £40 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermalright-True-Spirit-Copper-Socket/dp/B00629G1PG/
Thermalright Macho £40 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermalright-Rev-A-Cooler-Silent-Socket/dp/B008YTUN38/

Oh damn i hadn't even checked out SCAN yet...that price i thought it would easily be around 80GBP. Do you think it would make much of an improvement over my current cooler?

Hell yes. The Hyper 212 Evo is weaker cooling compared to TR True140 / Macho, let alone the Phanteks.

http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/cooler_master_hyper_212_evo_cpu_cooler_review,12.html

5-10°C less based on most sites but I think since you're using aftermarket fans maybe less

However you will get a much quieter PC

Oh sweet, At the moment im using both stock (Blademaster) ones and they aren't noisy...but i'm never properly happy as temps do tend to creep up. Can i ask if you do know...if Vengeance RAM would fit under the Phanteks fan? As no where seems to give a straight answer...and i watched a video from an old guy trying to measure a module and he rambled on about his pink tape measure for five minutes doh.gif
