8GB should be plenty. You'll probably have at least 3GB free after installing the OS and F@H.

Austweaker ( or Anthony) I have a pq1 Industrial 2.5 SATA Flash Drive (I paid 20.00 for it) that is currently loaded with either Debian or some flavor of Ubuntu. I ask, after I get this cleaned up ( what tool to use?) can I use this to load and run my folding rig? I would have to find a place to download kubuntu kde, burn it to disc then load it to the flash drive. There is no money this month so I have to make use of some hardware I already have. I know you do not use the same app to wipe this drive (essentially it is an SSD) that you would use to wipe a platter drive (dban) but I cannot remember the app to wipe this SSD. Perhaps I can just load on top of it. What do you think of me using the pq1? and does it need to be wiped.I will boot a rig off it and see what is on it but I think it is Debian 6. This pq1 sure is easy to boot off. At one time I loaded Win 7 on it and this thing was filled (it took 15.8Gb of the 16 on the drive). If what is on the drive is acceptable perhaps we use what is on it. I have Dr. appointments in the morning but I will work on it latter tomorrow. I am hoping to see a 15-20% increase in ppd, am I dreaming?

Download the .iso of the distro of your choice (kubuntu was suggested) and make a bootable thumb flash drive (2GB is enough, some distros get away with 1GB too). Pen Drive Linux Universal USB Installer (Ubuntu recommend this) or UNetbiootin are two programs for Windows which will help you create bootable live USB.

The installation process should handle the format and partition of the drive.

You will see an increase in SMP PPD, how much though, I cannot say. Such a long time since I played with Windows...

arvidab, you did not even address my question about using the pq1 I already have and it does not seem you read my statement about how I have to do this with hardware I already have, no additional purchases of anything else allowed.

EDIT: last time I put Ubuntu on a SSD it took up between 4-5GB. I am not saying a guy cannot eliminate some portions of the OS he does not need but at this time that guy is not me.

I would use the pq1 you already have, and if debian, or ubuntu is already on it, then you won't even have to reinstall the OS.  Or am I missing something?

Good luck, hope it works out nice for you.  As long as you have a bit of free space on the existing install it should be fine.  You can use the Linux instructions on the Stanford site:

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/LinGuide

There is a Debian/Ubuntu/Mint section that you can just copy/paste to the terminal.

Anubis, I fired up the pq1 and it is loaded with Ubuntu 10.04.I just have to give this a try.

EDIT: right at 10gb free space left out of the original 16gb

Nice!  That's plenty of space.

With 10.04 you will probably have to run an older version of the F@H client though. I would see if you can update it through the Ubuntu update software to something more recent.

Or just try a fresh install I suppose, if there isn't important data on there.

OH so the days of 10.04 being the preferred Ubuntu distro are long over with? This is not a problem as all there is on the drive is the OS.

I shut the rigs off for the night as it was 107F today. The house AC did not stand a chance.
