[TH] New Port on Xbox One Controller Makes it Incompatible with Current Gaming Headsets - Page 13

Well, just wait for adapters to hit the market at $30 a pop....like the iPhone 5 charger debacle...

Look at all the user manuals:

Those are amoung the most premium audio solutions for consoles, and they all use the 2.5mm connector on the controller.

The whole licensing thing is also why there are very few 3rd party wireless headsets- and none from any major manufacturer either.

The 2.5mm connector on the controller is used entirely for Mic. Meaning that as long as I/any other headset have optical out, I can use the XB audio out. Because of these Dolby standards, I can use it on a PC/XBOX/PS3. I'm confident that I will be able to use the same headset on the XB1 due to adherence to Optical Out.

Worse case scenario, I won't be able to use my Mic to talk to annoying 12yr olds. Woopee. Best case, I'll still be able to use it without an adapter on my PS4 or buy an ebay adapter(with myriads of choices) for the new XB1 controller.

Either way thats $30 microsoft just sucked out of you. I like how you seem to think its perfectly acceptable to just get rid of such a standard port.

I still can't believe how stupid this is. I know this has been their MO forever and that "we should just deal with it" like people are saying but I thought maybe they would finally break the mold. This isn't the early-cell-phone-proprietary-connector era anymore. God damn this brings back some nightmares of having to spend $50 on a new charger and car charger every time you got a new phone. It's like it really is 2002.

Incredible that there are people passively or actively advocating for proprietory standards that only hurt everyone but the corporations that make them.

I don't know anyone who complained about the audio quality of XBox 360.

Obviously it was nothing special, but it simply needs to do the job...and that's what it did.

I wonder if my wireless turtle beaches will work via bluetooth like the ps3 does?

I wonder if this will effect those with Astro headsets? I've seen quite a few on ebay lately alone with SCUF controllers. hmmm...

Sarcasm is so hard to put across in words on the internet...I said that the iPhone 5 charger debacle was such because it was a complete joke and customers went out in droves to get adapters when available. I'm far from okay with this.

That's the very thing everyone's taking issue with. I'm sure people don't exclusively use a mic to talk to "annoying 12yr olds". A headset without a usable mic is not fit for purpose and is effectively a pair of headphones.

From the original article, manufacturers will have to "use licensing and authentication protocols from Microsoft, potentially driving up costs for consumers. The licensing program could also limit the variety and competitive nature of the accessory market since all manufacturers would be required to adhere to Microsoft's terms." It's safe to say that the move is very anti-consumer.
