1333 @ 1T vs. 1866 @ 2T - FX-8350

I play SWTOR. SWTOR framerates are widely believed to be I/O bound in many situations. SSDs help, but what helps more is to put as much of the game as you can into a large RAMdisk, and there is a freeware program called "SWTOR Unleashed" which will do this automatically upon launching the game. It does help, and load screens are much more tolerable (SWTOR load screens are very slow even with an SSD). This is why I have 32 GB of RAM; I can fit the whole game into a RAMdisk and still have 6 GB leftover to run my machine.

Relevant components of my machine:
FX-8350 under a CM Hyper 212 Evo
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX/Gen3 R2.0
4 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance LP DDR3-1866 10-11-10-30

I have not overclocked my machine and I do not intend to do so in the near future, because I think I already have enough horsepower to last a few years. While SWTOR is terribly optimized, it's actually rather gentle on CPUs. Also, games are generally more GPU dependent, and in the coming years more games will take full advantage of more than four threads.

When I installed my RAM and booted my machine, it was set to 1333 9-9-9-24, as expected. It does not run at 1866 10-11-10-30 (the advertised speed) or even 1600 9-9-9-24 unless the command rate is set to 2T. Also, either of the latter two memory configurations causes my motherboard to underclock the HyperTransport link to 2200 (stock for the FX-8350 is 2600).

Assuming I don't want to do anything even remotely fancy with voltages or remove any DIMMs, would I rather:

A) Leave everything on auto and run my memory at 1333 9-9-9-24 1T with 2600 HTT
B) Bump up my memory to 1600 9-9-9-24 2T with 2200 HTT
C) Bump up my memory to 1866 10-11-10-30 2T with 2200 HTT

Any any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

I just ran Cinebench 11.5 with both option A and option C. Everything else was stock for both tests.

Here are the results:

Option A:
Multi-threaded: 7.04
Single threaded: 1.11

Option C:
Multi-threaded: 7.09
Single threaded: 1.11

Perhaps memory performance simply wasn't a bottleneck when only one core was working, but when all eight cores were active, running the memory faster, with looser timings and a slower command rate, was superior.

I don't know much about benchmarks and there are very few that I can name off the top of my head. It's entirely possible that Cinebench is an inadequate benchmark for this purpose, but after reading through this forums some more, it seems that my choice will be inconsequential when running actual applications (SWTOR, etc).

Try MaxxMEM, SuperPI 1M & 32M, wPrime 32M & 1024M, as these are all memory intensive benchmarks. Some are also very CPU dependent. In wPrime, be sure to set it to "8 cores" under settings (it works both Physical and Logical cores).
