You are absolutely right about the Gamecube. Everyone hated on it and talked horribly about the graphics, and then when the consoles got to the ends of their lives, everyone kind of woke up and realized gamecube had the best graphics.

Nintendo, I think, gets away with this because they have their own graphics layer which can do some nifty things. It doesn't use OpenGL or DirectX, but it's own deal.

But looking at WiiU, it seems like Nintendo's problem isn't the hardware power itself, but the fact that in order to get a lot out of it you have to work around it. We live in a world where every port is a lazy hackjob. Considering MS and Sony have gone for x86 to make porting easier (maybe?), it only further isolates Nintendo due to their requirements for special attention being paid to their hardware.

The games will come and WiiU will start moving. Nintendo will just have to find some good partners who are willing to dedicate themselves to Nintendo, much like Rareware in the 90s. MS buying Rareware was the worst thing to happen to Nintendo, if we still had games like Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong Racing, etc on WiiU, there'd be a lot more people buying WiiU.

Ever since I got back into PC gaming, I rarely if ever turn on my console. I literally haven't used it for over a year. I have no interest in the PS4 / XBone as 95% of the games are on PC, and if they aren't I can get basically the same game with a different name on the PC...

But the Wii-U? I can't get Mario and Zelda on a PC...

I will snag one when it drops to $150 and there are games. Easy decision...

Rare went to ****. With the exception of Viva Pinata they have made garbage in the last decade. Nintendo could have acquired them but obviously did not feel there was value in doing so. The Rare of the N64 days is not the Rare of today. And, yes, I bought Perfect Dark Zero at launch for Xbox 360. What a waste of money.

Yep. And the GCN was very close to the XBOX/PS2.

It didn't help either that the N64 had a weird memory architecture (which I don't understand the details of), and used some sort of antialiasing that ended up eating more bandwidth than it should have.

But polygon-wise, it had a 50% higher polygon processing capacity than the PSX.

I hated playing Playstation games because they had that Sega Saturn 'texture' jump pop thing that just drove me nuts. In fact Playstation graphics in general hurt my eyes as a kid.

I wish I could get a video of it or something, because a lot of people don't even realize it was a thing...but the wall textures in PSX games like...crawl up and down. It's REALLY annoying when you're wrapped up in a game and the walls start moving.

Most of the N64's hardware limitations came from cartridges. They couldn't push the textures it could really do because cartridge memory was prohibitively expensive.
