Why no mega GPU on same unit as CPU - Page 3

Because every architecture involves the CPU communicating with other components in a different way. It's not something you can standardize without adding a lot of latency. Additional latency is OK for a GPU because of the nature of it, but adding latency with the way the CPU communicates with RAM would kill performance.

Let's just say for the sake of argument the PCIe interface adds 1ms of latency. At 60 FPS, that'd be 1/16th of a frame of latency. Not noticeable, not worth spending money on to improve. Try adding 1ms latency to CPU operations and your computer will perform like ****.

They're called APU's, they do exist and for those that think they aren't "mega" - they definitely are compared to on-board video. AMD's 5800 Trinity has a 7660D GPU on the die which is roughly equal to a 6670HD. That's a lot of GPU. The reason you're not gonna get a Titan on the same die as your CPU is because of heat. It will be a few more years before the heat issue is resolved (with a smaller manufacturing process) but APU's are here.

This may have been covered already but I'm not reading through all the posts just to find out.
APU what?

It's an improvement, but it's kind of a hollow victory because a 6670 is just at that point where you can't crank up the quality settings on recent games and get decent fps. Good for left4dead2, but not for Bad Company 2 even. I've tried and failed to get maximum quality on hd 6770 with BC2.

I believe that is what you're looking for , although the slot is perpendicular to the board.

Well honestly i think at this point i am a little frusterated cause i dont see the point of this thread..
you asked why there arent monster gpus inside cpus

we told you why

I dont think you are going to find anyone else who wont repeat a different version of what was already said (pretty much in the first post)

Im sorry to dissapoint you, but your dream of being able to do anything with tech and have it magicly work is just plain madness.
Its taken decades of research and development and countless teams of highly educated people to get what we have today. Its ok to ask why somthing isnt the way that it is, but its starting to sound like you simply think your idea is better and that the whole tech industry has it all wrong.

I think the best way to sum it up is..

You can only put X amount of performance on a single chip before you reach the technological limitation of what you can do with it.

Otherwise what kind of idiot would spend millions to build a supercomputer with 100s of CPUs when you can just put it all on 1 chip?

hello,
don't go giving amd idea's like that, we already need the fire brigade out for our cpu's.
