The last 5 cards I've had have all been XFX actually so I feel some sort of affinity towards them. It all stems from the first 7900GT I bought and battered the hell out of. it literally got thrown all over, experimented with my first OCs on it and had after-market coolers on and off it every week. When it finally died a few years later they replaced it without any questions or fuss. Obviously the 7900GT was long gone by then but they gave me an 8600 instead which is still alive and kicking in my brothers PC.

Reading some stuff on here though it seems they've gotten a bit worse when it comes to support after they switched to ATI. I suppose I'll see soon enough. One of the Crossfire 5870s has a bit of a flickering/screen tearing type issue if I use it as the main card so once I get the 7970 in and working I'll be RMAing that before selling it.

This article might help although they are 7950's and under heavy load, a lot of the 7970 coolers are identical, will give you a real world rough idea of how the fans sound under load. Which might help your decision a little. smile.gif

I have managed to unlock my voltages and so have a couple of other people.

Most 7970 cards (including XFX and Sapphire) are locked via hardware.

XFX support was really great to me when I had their 7970s. They usually answer tickets within 20-30 minutes. I had to RMA once and it took 2 weeks including the shipping.

I switched to a 670 because their 7970s are voltage locked.

I wouldn't get an XFX card if you are in the UK, my experience, and many others, with their UK RMA department is shocking. Their USA support is supposedly very good though, which is odd.

Weird that their UK support sucks. It's too bad because it really soil their name.

Their USA support, on the other hand, is top notch.

Well, like I said it was perfect the first time I used it but it's been a good 4 years I think since then. It's probably gone down hill.

Hey OP what did you decide on? I am too interested in near silent operation in idle and current GPUs do not really achieve that. But I found something good!
I discovered that some people use msi afterburner to put fan rpm to 0% and it makes the card stops it fans! It doesn't work with all GPUs though, so far I only have reports for a 7870 gigabyte and a 7850 club 3D. http://www.overclock.net/t/1421563/gpu-passive-in-idle-finally
