the gigabyte is almost definitely quieter if you care more about that. the two for $409 would offer the best combination of cooling and low noise level are the asus and evga models.

and since I feel like stirring the pot, what happened to all the people saying the 7970 would do better above 1200p resolution because of the extra memory and bandwidth.

It really makes you wonder what's the point of all that hardware when it doesn't translate to better performance. I think I will be a-ok with 2GB.

TPU did reviews of the ASUS DirectCU, Palit JetStream, Gigabyte WindForce, and NVIDIA reference cards, but no MSI cards.

I'd give it a couple of days, as it's a little early to expect head-to-head reviews.

EDIT: Overclockers.com did a review of the MSI TF (i.e. the less-expensive red Gaming Series model, not the Lightning), and Legit Reviews did a head-to-head between the MSI TF and the ASUS DirectCU.

I think it wins for appearance, anyways.

Also, the windforce I posted above is beating the $459 Lightning, strange. Is there only one winforce or do they use that name on multiple cards. There's a windforce for sale for $409.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

this graph is showing 1200p, not "above 1200p". the 770 is going to be faster anyway due to even higher speeds then the 680, a card that trades blows with the 7970.

Some games favor one brand over the other. It's not hard to find a game that shows the 7970GE beating the 770 by 20%, or vice versa. Different approaches lead to discrepancies in performance.

The results in HotHardware's review are atypical (most other reviews show a much smaller gap in 770 and 7970GE Crysis 3 performance), and even if they weren't Crysis 3 tends to favor NVIDIA hardware.

Often times it does translate into better performance.

It's easy to find a few examples that can show whatever we want them to.
