Its a professional screen. 10 bit color channels and such. That is why its at such a premium. Although even taking all specs into consideration I have a feeling bulk of that 5k $ is still the "4k novelty" factor. What determines to a large degree the manufacturing cost of LCD display is the cost of the panel which scales (as far as I understand) more or less linearly with the area (per square cm) so if you increase the panel size from 20'' to 40'' the price of the panel is usually approx 4x higher (and a bit more unless you allow more defects per panel).

Anyway, I would expect the Korean versions to be less than 1000$ and allow up to ~20 defective pixels per screen with the "perfect pixel" versions approx 30% higher in price. For that all we need is to have the sales volumes sort of pick it up first so its kinda egg-chiken scenario. If volumes go up all the people will be all over these panels and volumes pick up even more, however, as currently the panels are relatively highly priced then not many people go for these and as such volumes remain low and price remain high. Might take up to few years for the Koreans (or whoever else happens to think its a good idea) to bet a farm on 4k getting mainstream and starting proper mass production hoping that volume goes up a lot of price drops to sub 1000$. Last three generations of GFX cards almost all have a displayport so skipping the logic boards in budget versions would make sense with more premium models adding also HDMI - other legacy standards (VGA, DVI) do not have the bandwidth to drive these screens properly although I think you can sort of pull it off if you drop the refresh rate sufficently if you really want to.

$5k is a bit much for me too. I would consider up to $3,000.00

No doubt heaps will sell though. It's very attractiveand first of its kind biggrin.gif

yeh 5k is abit much but thats the price for being first

with 5k i could get 3x 30" dells or even 5x 27" 1440p screens in portrait for even more pixels.

if bezels are an issue and you have space to spare you can make do with a few 1080p projectors

I wouldn't mind seeing that 39" behemoth on my desk.

Also, it seems they will start shipping them fairly soon. Props to ASUS for taking a chance in the 4k market.

For enthusiasts, the 4K market doesn't exist yet, since even for us, the available $10k professional screens are a bit steep. I wouldn't say releasing a consumer 4K display is taking a chance, you would be the only one on the market! Its like taking a monopoly nobody seems to want.

And that 50" Seiki doesn't really count, gamers don't want it since its too big and only 30Hz. Also its USA only.

190 ppi ? Thats kind of the high side but if its high or not depends on the distance you sit from it. With that high ppi you can sit pretty close to that screen without it getting pixelated. About 50 cm or so ? googling gives me somekind of calculator for that http://isthisretina.com/ which claims that this size and reso display would be getting "retina" at 65 cm (~25'') and that its approx 140 ppi.

That means that if you sit at 65 cm you can fill quite significant area of your FOV with that display. Good for immersion and stuff you know.

But IGZO is Sharp, which is a Japanese company...

Also, about that $5k price tag, I only see this source saying it:
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/157058-asus-launches-the-first-consumer-oriented-4k-monitor-yours-for-around-5000

But they say in article that, that is just their guess. I hate editors who write "facts" in title and then admit that it is their estimate or guess in the actual article.
