[wffctech] AMD Kaveri APUs Compatible With Socket FM2+ – New Roadmap Confirms Launch in Late 2013 - Page 4

Finally an APU with enough horsepower to actually play games comfortably. I really wish this APU would release right now with Haswell so I can make a choice. I have a feeling that I might regret my Haswell purchase when Kaveri releases with HSA.

Hmm, seems GDDR5 has the possibility, the traces don't have to be equal as in previous GDDR: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/memory/display/20081225124647_GDDR5_Memory_Standard_Is_Here_to_Stay_for_Long__ATI.html

Still, given the maximum GDDR5 for Kaveri is probably 4GB and the niche aspect to GDDR5 DIMMs, I still wouldn't expect it outside of OEM products. Might find it's way into a mini-itx everything soldered on board or SFF barebones, though.

and the cpu limitations?

For gaming purposes, I doubt there would be many CPU limitations with a 7790 class GPU. For non-gaming purposes, HSA enabled software will gain a huge boost. For non-HSA enabled software... you're buying the wrong CPU.

I remember seeing this article discussing how Haswell GT3e is on par or slightly better than a 6670. Then THIS comes out and AMD is like "lol nice try Intel."

Well, ask Microsoft how they'll be using theirs. Replace the 8 Jaguar cores with 2 Steamroller modules, and bam, you got what they claim.

But... I would expect a very high TDP out of this. 85w from the 7790 half alone, they would only have 40w to pack in the CPU half. A 6570 (close as I can find to a Trinity GPU) has about 60w TDP, meaning that Trinity would also have a 40w envelope for the CPU half, assuming we base it on the 5800k. The 5700 model manages to pack it into a (much) smaller envelope. Granted, IMC is shared, RAM doesn't count in that TDP, and so on, so that allows for slight cutting back.

... Assuming Steamroller has a similar TDP to Trinity, it is actually possible that they could pack a 7790 and 2 modules into one die, and have it fit in the 125w segment. Holy crap. drool.gif

On the other hand, the 7750 has a TDP of 55w. Much more reasonable to expect.

I'm not sure they'll do it though. It would be nothing short of awesome, but still, I'll set my sights on the much more reasonable to expect 7750-level performance. I doubt they want to go above 100w TDP anyway.

What is the TDP of the quad core? Perhaps I should read the whole article wink.gif

See above for estimations, but don't take it as law. We have almost no way of knowing how the TDP is spread.

go AMD, we got an obvious soft spot for ya!

It's because of HSA. The igp would be more useful than whatever segregated IGP Intel produces that only has capacity for quick sync.

And also unlike on Intel you don't need to shell out $300 for a decent IGP.

And I was gonna wait for steamroller. IF I could one of these paired with a 7990 that would be sweet.
