folding at home progress in conky.

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
I have my folding at home work unit progress in my conky. I just started the native gpu folding in linux andnow have a second client slot i would like to add to the conky script.

This is what i have. I altered the original to call on the gpu log.txt
Code:
{font AvantGardeLTMedium:bold:size=10}${color Tan1}Folding At Home ${color slate grey}${hr 2}${font}
${color white}Work Unit Progress: ${execi 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'} %        ${execibar 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'}

${color white}Work Unit Progress: ${execi 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/work/01/01/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'} %        ${execibar 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/work/01/01/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'}

But what it does now is just show the gpu one. I would like to see both of them listed
this is the entire section
Code:
${font AvantGardeLTMedium:bold:size=10}${color Tan1}Folding At Home ${color slate grey}${hr 2}${font}
${color white}Work Unit Progress: ${execi 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'} %        ${execibar 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'}

${color white}Work Unit Progress: ${execi 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/work/01/01/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'} %        ${execibar 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/work/01/01/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'}

Ok, so i had it working perfectly for a short bit. Then once the 2 clients finished a frame they both started to show the same work unit???

This is the full folding progress script for my conky

${font AvantGardeLTMedium:bold:size=10}${color Tan1}Folding At Home ${color slate grey}${hr 2}${font}
${color white}SMP Progress: ${execi 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'} % ${execibar 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'}

${color white}GPU Progress: ${execi 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/work/01/01/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'} % ${execibar 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/work/01/01/log.txt | tr '(' '\n' |tr ')' '\n' | grep -E "(%|percent)"|tail -n 1 | tr -d 'percent' | tr -d '%'}

And this is what it looks like

This seems to be when it cooperates. Sometimes it shows the same unit.

Have you tried the other exec* commands? Maybe it's a bug?

http://conky.sourceforge.net/variables.html

I'm sure you've looked through that already.

Wait. Native GPU client? Are you sure you don't mean the Windows client via Wine?
Last I checked there was zero support for GPU folding on Linux, and the low quantity of WUs available made the older Windows client via wine basically useless....
I might pick folding up again if this is the case...

Edit, I see they opened a couple of cores for Linux beta testing. Neat.
Anyways, from what I see you are reading the same file from both clients, also its entirely possible for both GPU's to receive the exact same WU.

Just to clarify, since I don't fold and this would be insightful, they run in parallel then? Both working on the same WU to get it done faster?

Nope, PandeGroup has considered that but it would require a lot of end-user configuration and would overall make things less desirable to run. Each WU gets run thousands of times to assure computational accuracy. For example, if a peptide is being calculated differently each and every submission - something is wrong with the math. However if 1 in 10,000 submissions is off, then likely the math is right, but the error occured due to some hiccup in the hardware (due to overclocking or otherwise)

It is a scientific motion after all, you wouldn't want inaccurate calculations mucking up your experiment's results.

The SMP cores are designed to run multithreaded across any number of CPU cores present in a system, given that it fits certain geometry. (for example, a 22 core environment, would get truncated to 20 cores to fit a mathematical model of 5x1x4 or 5x2x2, instead of 11x2 - I'm not sure on their specific geometry requirements but some counts specifically don't work. Obviously 22 cores isn't normally possible, but if you pass it an argument of 22 cores on a 24 core server, leaving 1 for OS overhead and 1 for GPU Folding - you'd be left with 22 cores for SMP)

Note that I'm probably very wrong about some of the computational accuracy stuff, as I don't know enough about the internals of FaH... I know that some of the projects are even based on random math (mutations and such) so it becomes even more difficult to get solid results... I do know that the multi-gpu disitributed computing is pretty difficult for them to pull off in an easy manner because it's already distributed over all the cores on the GPU, and then you'd have to further distribute it across PCI-E lanes and such and that would require similar geometry hardware...

OHHH So you just ment, they are independently working on the same WU. Ok ok, for some reason I didn't think of that. Again, don't fold so that wasn't too crazy for me to think. Allright, that clarifies some things.

I like the project but power bills are already high enough, I couldn't imagine folding when I am not using. =P Maybe some day I'll have the money to throw at the power company and do it for the greater good.

This is my gpu log which it reads from
"${execi 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/work/01/01/log.txt "

This is the SMP log
${execi 15 cat /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt

You can see the path is different. Also I was sure to check that the work units were not the same.

The fact that the script is so extensive for it to work, may it's just a bug that may have no work around. I know the use of conky script to monitor folding is quite new to a lor of folks. But the fact that the GPU cores are now native and quite efficient in Linux, I hope we will see some people with the skill to refine this feature. I would love to complete some type of script that includes an equation outputting ppd and tpf through the conky. Now that would be just plain awesome.

Why not create an external script to call from? Or two scripts? One explicitly to display GPU1 and one to GPU2, then call each script individually in conky?

Well one of them is cpu, and the other is gpu. But i do see your point. I have posted the two strings that display the info. I don't have a whole lot of free time to do long seperate scripts. fell free to toy with it!! thumb.gif
