I'd like to get as close to 120fps stable (lightboost doesn't work at 144Hz if I decide to go that route) as possible but also note that I play with all of the lowest settings and a lower than standard resolution.

here is what i got in BF3 MP with crossfire (7970/7950 all stock) my i7 SB 4.5GHz just to give you an idea . . .

that was 1080 Ultra and 4MSAA. the i7 struggled to keep up with the gpus.

A used 680 would probably cost me around $350 whereas both the 770 and 7970 are $400 new. However the 7970 comes with the 4 game pack that I could sell. Decisions decisions....
if you want light boost you have to go nvidia

@rdr09 - thanks but not really useful since I use low settings.
@y2kcamaross - thanks, but I'm well aware of this.

WAIT.. Let me get this straight you are going to buy a 144hz monitor just to play bf3 on low setting and below 1080p to get more than 120 fps? And on top of that you want to upgrade your GPU too?

Mastercommander: *Flips the table*

Mastercommander:*calms down*

Ok well in your case scenario it is not worth upgrading your GPU then.

The reason I'm playing on low and with a lower resolution is to get a constant 120FPS. I play BF3 competitively FWIW (Shootmania as well but it's not very HW demanding). If I could play BF3 on high with a constant 120FPS then I would. Another reason I'm upgrading is that I'm sick of dealing with SLI. When I'm not gaming I'm making use of 3 monitors which I can't do with SLI enabled (with the 460's). Toggling SLI on and off multiple times a day is extremely annoying.

then, the 770 will be best for your needs. at par or more powerful than your gpus and will eliminate the hassles you're experiencing. wait for the price to settle and more reviews which one is the best at the right price.

Ok you mentioned you hate going from surround to desktop mode. Here is your solutions-
1) stick with one gtx 770(when you sli them you cannot switch from surround to desktop as smooth but would still have to kill the applications in the background.
2) with amd eyefinity you are able to switch from eyefinity to regular desktop mode in a matter of seconds by a hotkey. Very simple and very smooth compared to nvidia. Nvidia doesn't offer a preset which is a downer for people that have more than one mode . in your case a gaming and a normal mode.

Gtx 770 will actually use the same coolers as the gtx 680 not the gtx 780.

Damn.

In that case, the GTX 680. I've seen used ones go for $340.
