If you're into Rock/Metal, I'd suggest Brütal Legend. That game biggrin.gif I love it. Don't expect a truly amazing story, but I have to admit it's fun and the atmosphere is, well.. self-explanatory. A hack and slash, also the boss encounters are easy once you figure out the tactics.
although I do appreciate metal, I am trying to narrow down a list of quasi-masterpieces where the story is truly unforgettable. This is mostly due to my severe lack of time, so since I am forced to make a choice, I would like to give my time to the very best available; should I have the time, I would really like to play looooots of games smile.gif

A game hard enough to actually become quite memorable will be Dark Souls. But it might as well make you give up on life. biggrin.gif
As I read a comment somewhere "I'm on the tutorial and I already died 4 times." I died too redface.gif
ouch, no too hard stuff... I wouldn't be able to spend that much time "winning" it xD

If I want a storyline, I play really old games. New titles just don't cut it... So I turned to MMOs.
this is what clearly emerged from this thread: the new generation of games seems to lack epicness, depth, and very few titles will be written in stone in our memories.
I am crossing fingers, maybe more talents will popup when we less expect them smile.gif

Yeah Dragon Age has that old-school RPG difficulty. Some fights will be impossible if unless you're at a certain level (which isn't a problem, just return to fight on another day). Combat in Dragon Age: Origins (the only one that is a masterpiece) is very strategic and not casual at all.

DAO is 50-60 hours, and should be played at least 6 times on 6 different characters to experience everything it has to offer, and this is excluding the DLC. DA2 is 40-50 hours long without any of the DLC.

The problem here is, most story driven games are not casual. Casual and story-driven don't really go together regarding games, since most casual gamers just want time-wasting entertainment like Call of Duty.

Mass Effect is a bit more casual, especially 2 and 3. But they also keep the industry-leading storytelling found in Dragon Age (in fact, Mass Effect pretty much invented it). So if you're ever in the mood for a sci-fi masterpiece, definitely give it a go.

Of the other games I listed, the ones closest to being casual are Amnesia and Penumbra, since there's no combat at all (except in the first Penumbra, but it can be avoided entirely). They still reward exploration, and have a number of puzzles, but at least the puzzles make sense.

Dear Esther is a story-driven, almost Lovecraftian game that can be considered casual, since there really isn't much gameplay to speak of. It's like a short story. On that note, there are some very similar mods for Crysis like Triptych and The Worry of Newport.

The upcoming Source mod Underhell is masterfully crafted and story driven. The prologue is out to give you a taste, but it requires Half-Life 2. Chapter 1 will be out soon, doesn't require any paid item. It is moving away from casual gameplay as you can see here and here, but you should still be able to finish it without many problems.

Yes, you level up. Well, you will pretty much faceroll through encounters (and still enjoy the story as it is) if you play it on the easiest difficulty.
However, I remember I have this. Highest difficulty, an epic encounter indeed (Click to show)
Which was a relatively easy fight.
And this Now THIS is a hard fight - pre-last difficulty (Click to show)
Which took me a day to get through. ^^

But easy is easy, I'd suggest give it a try (you know what I mean) and if you still like it within two hours, go for the game. thumb.gif

You might as well enjoy it. If you are new to RPGs, it will be a challenge. But you will 'win it'. wink.gif

Yeah just go to easy mode. You don't have to grind or go out of your way to level up, like you do in MMOs. It happens just as you play the game. You can even select Auto Level Up, but this will probably just make the game harder for you, since the game might not choose the ideal upgrade path or skills.

You might wanna consider the $45 offer (two RPGs for the price of one and a bunch of extras).

By the way, Dragon Age Origins is pretty good. It's really cool how some story events are different depending on the race and social status you choose. Dragon Age 2 is also ok, but subpar comparing to the original (sadly, EA kinda forced Bioware to do a rushed job on DA2).

Mass effect just like what have been already stated above, I liked the story very much, specially the first one (xbox only), but 2 and 3 are awesome too.

What do you mean "xbox only"? Mass Effect 1 is multiplatform, but was most focused on PC. The inventory system to my knowledge was just awful on console, and if I recall correctly, it actually used separate keys for sprinting and interacting with objects (unlike ME2/ME3).

Mass Effect is unique in the sense that all three games really make one; as standalone games they aren't complete. Each one continues the story of the other. You won't believe how many people began the series with ME2 or ME3. poke.gif

Just checked the release dates, yeah you are right, i didn't know they released it for PC too (a year later) and ps3 over 5 years later, I mainly play games on my xbox.
yeah you are right they changed a lot after 1, 2 is like a completely new game playing it but continue the story, Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
i wish they release a 4th, I remember in the final thing, one of the choices show him alive, or they can rebuild him just Cerberus did tongue.gif

I can only think of one that'll stick with me with an amazing story and it's got to be Mass Effect rolleyes.gif

Just everything about the series is masterfully created, the writing, the characters, the lore everything just fits together perfectly and it really is such a great set of games, if you're looking for something along those lines you have to give it a try biggrin.gif
