Games you just couldn't be bothered to finish that other people raved about... - Page 37

Bioshock Infinite

Got it, played 50% of it in 2-3 days, then was busy for a few days, never had the motivation to go back.

The combat just became dull/boring and I couldn't enjoy it anymore, and I only lasted that long due to the quality of the story telling. Though I did enjoy the combat for a while.

That was with a single 570, I now have a second one and I'm still not motivated to complete it.

I love great single player, story-driven games, but I'm pretty "meh" on Bioshock Infinite purely based on the combat - I just don't get what looks so fun about it......./shrug

I'll get it when it goes dirt cheap on steam, but at half price - I'll pass

Playing Mass Effect 3 won't ruin anything. Are you avoiding it just because people say the ending sucks? The ending could have been much better, but it's funny when you ask most people why it sucks. Either they can't answer, or they give some of the most ridiculous reasons. Most of it is just bandwagon hate, the legitimate complaints about the ending are harder to come across. rolleyes.gif

Besides, ME3 has the majority of the most amazing, memorable moments in the Mass Effect series. It shows a ton of improvements over the first two, only the last ten minutes or so has the potential to disappoint.

That's how I see the game, it's mostly hype, and the combat is meh.

What really held me was the plot, but around 50% I was already feeling incredibly bored with the combat, then I had to break for a few days, and I just wasn't motivated to go back.

I really don't get how people could get 'bored' with the 'combat' of Bioshock Infinite. I thought it provided more 'variety' of approaches that one could take to each fight than any game I'd ever seen. I could see the complaint that the middle of the game drags a bit w/not enough story advancement and too much fighting, but the actual combat itself I thought was really fun. You just have to use some imagination, try out some of the many different options available (the different powers and such) and you can make it pretty damned entertaining IMHO. It's just as fun of combat as any other first person shooter I've ever played.

On topic, some games I never finished that (at least some) people raved about:
  • Torchlight
  • Torchlight 2 (I haven't had it *that* long but I've barely started and not sure I will ever finish it ... I know this is trifling of me to say, but 2004-quality-level graphics in 2012 was pretty disappointing, even for a cheap game. I'd rather play PoE).
  • Assassins Creed (tried One, Two, and Brotherhood, got bored and never finished any of 'em ... Two I almost finished though)
  • Dragon Age Origins (I just couldn't get into the combat style ... too much 'work/thinking' and not enough 'fun' to me)
  • Mass Effect 3 (plan to eventually finish it but I've been working on it for like a year)
  • Darksiders 2 (I'm almost done, and plan to eventually finish it but I've been working on it for like a year)
  • Dead Space 2 & 3 (probably never will finish 2, but I've had 3 for a few months and I'm only like 1/8 done ... may eventually finish it)

Also, whazzup Ascii? Haven't seen ya around in a while ... what, did you go and get yourself a 'life' or something? biggrin.gif

If its actually true that ME3 is the last installment i think its a fans duty to get it at its 5$ on sale price tag and give it a few run through's. A good chunk of the game is amazing.

Anyone who still buys into the hype of a video game release needs to get real. Especially all the hype being generated for the NEXT GEN ( dun dun dun) Though i have already pre-ordered multiple of the next gen games. I have also done zero research on them. I will figure it all out when it shows up in my inbox. Buying into hype is buying into stupidity.

I may be totally wrong, but here is what i think of the combat in bioshock SO FAR(1/2) through. For 90% of targets i can throw them in the air, head shot them, and be done with it. Doing it another way takes more effort/time, Though I have been forcing my self to find more entertaining ways of dispatching the guard.

It seems, the more diversity a game has in its combat system the balanced it needs to be. If you have 10 skills, but 2 of them are more effective then the rest, then why use them. This is probably partly the old salty MMO player in me.

It all comes down to expectations I think. I can remember back when I REALLY got into PC gaming seriously (1998) almost EVERY game had a demo before it was released. Not a beta you had to pay access to get, but a straight up demo so you could sample the game play. .

Nowadays you hardly ever see that, especially with a AAA title. You watch videos, listen to marketing hype, and trust a few game reviewers that get early access...that's how we make our decisions now.

So you really can't blame anyone, as the options are limited and now they entice us with "pre-order" bonuses.

I'm guilty of it myself! rolleyes.gif

I haven't played much BF3 in the past year, but the other day I saw BF3 Premium Access for $9, so I jumped on it. Why? Not because I was super interested in the extra maps etc., but because anyone with Premium access gets the BF4 beta when it releases.

Again, guilty as charged!

Remember the Tony Hawk (1) demo? (playstation)

I think part of what you describe is simply "sign of the times" type of deal. The conscious movement away from CD's has led to less demo'ing and more beta'ing. (most of the demo's i played as a kid were in some sort of physical format, i remember getting doom(i think) demo on floppy, i was like 7) Also, I would assume it takes longer to make a game now. Meaning that it's still heavily under construction when they start hyping it to us. (add up the 1,000 man team hours)

The the only games that I didn't bother to finish were
red dead redemption- way too damn long, I would play it then work got in the way, and just never picked it up again that I just went to youtube and wiki to find out what happened
Fallout New Vegas- fallout is the type of game that I play once and never pick up again, got 50% and gave up
