Nor have I enjoyed a strategy game as much as Age of Empires 1&2/Command & Conquer since....

What I'm saying is, games have lost all their soul, developers are not giving us what we want anymore:

Huge amounts of customisation/character creation/gun-attachments/weapons/armour/clothes

Huge amounts of gameplay variation from intuitive combat systems to the simple shooter...

They all lack SOMETHING, you all must admit, you sit there for an hour or two... finding yourself FORCING yourself to play a game, because you have such a mega-atomic-death-PC that you can't not play a game on it. I just seem to use it as a time waster now, I play Arma 3, shoot some people for a bit, log off, play War Thunder for a bit, shoot a few planes down, log off... everything is just about the progression in games, you play Arma 3 to progress through your own "mental campaign"... etc... You all know where I'm coming from with this, otherwise, maybe I've just lost it with gaming. I have 144 steam games, and there isn't one of them I truly want to play, I'm always waiting on that NEXT BIG GAME, that never arrives... I have to mod all my games these days just to enjoy them, Skyrim/GTA 4 are prime examples, and even then, mods ruin them because they come with a plethora of issues that constitute towards your immediate rejection of playing that game for X amount of time.

I'm totally lost right now, no idea what games I even enjoy anymore. Competition based games like COD just, bore me to tears, and so many people seem to get so much out of it... I just don't get it, 10 minute games? Small maps? What is it? I don't get it. Is there something wrong with me? Or have games just gone down hill... Where's the EPIC MAPS we thought of back when we were playing 007 Goldeneye... seriously, I thought those maps were massive, and that gaming would only get bigger and better.. BUT IT DIDN'T.

The bolded statement surely isn't true, games are more popular and selling more than ever nowadays. But I agree that a lot of mainstream games are just crap with no effort put into them. 10-15 years ago, pretty much every popular game was also a good game (or better) that hit the mark in most areas, achieving what they set out to do. I cannot say the same today.

They're giving people what they want... the problem is the people and what they want. Apparently they want the same unpolished, barebone, overpriced, low-level mindless rehashes over and over again.

Also, CoD is not competition based. The series started off as single player war games, but disintegrated into casual multiplayer opposed to competition based. Competitive shooters are rare these days, the only ones I can point out in recent years are CS:GO, Crysis, and Crysis Warhead.

Those Crysis games actually show evolution in the competitive shooter genre, since they offer the same twitch competition as games like CS/UT but with an actual learning curve, and they offer a higher level of team-based strategic gameplay. But yeah, back to my original point, casual multiplayer has taken over.

And no, there's nothing wrong with you for not liking CoD/MoH/Battlefield. I'd like to say there's something wrong with them, but that's just mean. Then again it might be true, most of them can't even say why they enjoy such games. They keep playing them even though they clearly get frustrated at every death, every undetected shot, every loss, lag, etc, and most of them don't even understand the type of game they're playing (e.g., they're actually convinced that they're competitive).

It's shocking that people can play those games for hundreds of hours, doing the same mindless thing over and over. They don't get anything out of those games, aside from the most basic form of time-wasting entertainment. That's pretty much what mainstream gaming and gamers have deteriorated into.

Still, if you know where to look, who knows what you might find? Despite everything I've said, my top 15 favorite games all came out within the last 6 years. Games have certainly changed in every genre... I think some are for the worse, but some are for the better.

I feel you. There arent as many game as before that really get my gaming juice flowing. Most of the time it's all about the hype; you start to play the game then realize after a few dozen of hours that it is just more of the same thing.

Dark souls, The Witcher 2, Starcraft 2 and The Walking Dead, IMHO, had that ''something'' special. You should give them a try.

About Dark Souls, I know that the port is terrible, but the game is so good that you'll forget about everything else.

Now, at the moment I am trapped into Guild Wars 2. It is really great.

Now, at the moment I am trapped into Guild Wars 2. It is really great.

I have all of those, The Witcher 2 combat leaves much to be desired, the only thing propelling it is the narrative, which is good, but very clunky at times. The graphics are absolutely brilliant, I modified a few textures in to make it look even better, played it for about 3 hours, and was not compelled to continue. I don't know what it is, it's quite dull and boring. I am looking forward to The Witcher 3 though!!

I've played the original Demon Souls to death, started up Dark Souls and was unbelievably disappointed, I defeated pretty much everything in my path without dying for about 3 hours. Then all of a sudden, BAM, difficulty spike, lost loads of souls, couldn't be bothered with the horrendous PC port that it was, and quit, eventually dragged myself back on it, and after Demon Souls, I can honestly say, it was more of the same old boring combat. Ends up just being a bug-fest, when you watch video's online of people fighting bosses, it looks RIDICULOUS. Absolutely RIDICULOUS, they're just doing the same repeat nonsense tactic over and over, where's the fun... I guess it's good for people that haven't played Demon Souls to death. I don't want more of that game.

StarCraft 2.... not a spec on the original, which I didn't even like all that much anyway so unfortunately I wasted my money frown.gif

The Walking Dead, I agree with you, was exceptional, but after you've completed one bit, the rest just... blends in a bit. I follow the series, but even that is starting to annoy me. There isn't enough gameplay to warrant sitting there just to discover the story.

Sorry I meant Freespace 2, don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that, hahaha. Been watching too much about Star Citizen I guess, and think every good space sim was made by him... haha.

And "The bolded statement surely isn't true, games are more popular and selling more than ever nowadays. But I agree that a lot of mainstream games are just crap with no effort put into them. 10-15 years ago, pretty much every popular game was also a good game (or better) that hit the mark in most areas, achieving what they set out to do. Games are a lot more popular, yes, but a lot of the younger generation of gamers take what they get and enjoy it, somehow. We've been around long enough to realise that there hasn't really been a huge improvement in fun since those games I mentioned. Not to say all other games are inferior, that is not my bag. I still prefer to play Skyrim over Morrowind, or Arma 3 over Goldeneye, but nothing had quite the hold on my like those games did, and I'm sure a lot of people would agree with me. And when I say developers are not giving us what we want, I was referring to people with a brain, that know how games are made, that discuss the new technologies and game engines rather than "ARR LAD U C DAT SHOT I JST MADE WIV MY ROKET LUNCH, ARRR LAD, WS PRO", they're the people that can voice their opinion and actually have some respect for the industry, not the masses, the masses suck. Heck if you look on YouTube comments, or Twitter, or Facebook, everyone talks utter nonsense about their lives "Oh I'm going to the park with my 3 kids today, I'm almost 16 and have a GORJ BF, BFBFFS4LYF" etc...." a girl on my Facebook the other day, who actually quite likes games, but is a bit of a moron said "Just had to have a filling at the dentist, I could have gum disease. BUT I DON'T LIKE FRUIT IT'S VILE". Obviously add the horrendous spelling in there and you've got a convincing asbo. I'm not saying she's not allowed to dislike fruit, but honestly, has she tried every single fruit in existence? I sincerely doubt it, there must be one she likes. Plus, a lot of sweets and things she probably eats have ruined her taste buds, so anything not deliciously sweet is "vile".

Do you get where I'm going with this?

As avid PC gamers, we all want the same thing, Counter-Strike needs ADS and customisation THEN and only THEN will it be something I'll even be vaguely interested in, Counter-Strike Source was brilliant, I know they're sticking to their guns on the ADS thing, but, it has put a lot of us off, we all wanted to see that progression.

It's the same with a lot of games, developers just seem to go the cheapest route. CS:GO is almost identical to CS:S bar the gun tweaks, graphics tweaks and new game modes, which already existed for like 10 years.

Grid 2 didn't have a cockpit, back when I was playing Grid 1, I loved the balance they had between sim and arcade racer... now look at it? Looks like Need For Speed without any customisation other than decals. WHO DOESN'T PUT A COCKPIT IN A GAME, I don't care if it was for performance reasons on the consoles... Forza did it, GT5 did it.... Shift did it.... Test Drive did it... Why do we give these franchises our money without question, just funding the storm of faeces.

We need progression in games to be interested, something to work towards, which the COD franchise does fairly well, but it is just a shame the game is full of delinquents, small maps, uninteresting moment to moment gameplay, oh he got me, oh I got him, oh I got him to the knee or the arm or the leg, no big deal he died anyway... still counts as a kill at the end of the day. You can play COD like an absolute douchebag and still win. Everytime I go on it, everyone is using SMG's and never aiming down sight, it's almost like they just want to be playing Counter-Strike, without knowing that is what they want.

I don't get it.

^ I agree with most of what you said, but I disagree regarding CS:GO

CS in general has a specific type of gameplay that people are used to and like. Adding ADS just makes it like CoD, and we already have a bunch of those. The people attracted to CS:GO are people that have been playing CS in some iteration for a solid decade, and do NOT want to see the core gameplay changed. If they changed the core gameplay experience you would alienate the die hard CS fans, and be left with a handful of new gamers that would take interest in it just long enough for the next "thing" to come out...resulting in a dead game with empty servers in 6 months.

Trust me, I totally get what you are saying..but as long as the game has "Counterstrike" in the title, I doubt you will see ADS or any big changes to the gameplay.

Crysis was pretty meh. It was really only enjoyable for me when there wasn't aliens, I like stealth games not run and gun junk. I thought AC and BF sucked. Extremely repetitive and bad gameplay. Bioshock (1 and infinite, did not like 2) and Farcry (3, the others were not good) were pretty decent for me though.
