APU build help request

Thread Starter
I know, I'm sure this place gets 100 of these per day, but I need some help. Decided to go with APU for my HTPC/LAN PC. Here's what I have so far, I would like to keep this as cheap as possible. As far as games go, I play CS:GO almost exclusively, but I also play FIFA, Starcraft 2, and BF3. From there, it'll be mostly HTPC things. I have USB TV tuners that I use, and watch hulu, netflix, espn3, etc. I don't have an exact budget. I can save up, and get money pretty quickly, I'm just trying to do this as cheap as possible.

AMD A10 5800K - $109.99 @ Amazon
Corsair H60 - HAVE
ASRock FM2A85X-ITX - $100 @ Newegg
Team Xtreem LV 8GB - $65 @ Newegg
Bitfenix Prodigy - $80 @ anywhere
74 GB 10k RPM - HAVE
2TB HDD - ~$85 wait for sale
Raidmax 630W $40 @ Amazon warehouse

Ok, if I take the legs off of the Prodigy, I can fit it into my cubby, which supports my TV, I had a computer that I was using as my HTPC with the same setup that I sold that's how I know. Anyone have experience with that motherboard? Seemed to be the best reviewed small mobo.

Didn't go with an SSD, like I said just trying to cut costs. Have that old Raptor that I will use. Really have no idea about PSUs, I've had 2 of those Raidmax ones and not had trouble with either. But I don't know if I should just opt for that cheap 400W corsair. Also, RAM. Saw someone recommend that RAM in another thread and have kind of stuck with that, but I don't know. I have seen several people say that RAM speed matter a bunch with the APUs, but I've never really researched anything for a PC besides GPU and CPU.

Also, Newegg posted Facebook that they're announcing new APUs soon? Googled a little, and searched here, but couldn't find much. Is this like a Haswell deal (coming out now/asap) or is this months down the line?

Help is appreciated.

Looks fine and you could also add a discrete GPU later on as well to boost the graphics performance.

AMD are releasing RIchland APUs in June I believe which will offer a small performance increase and Kaveri late this year which may offer a bigger performance increase.

Builds that I have seen remove the feet/top havent looked too flash as I think you may have to chop them off but im not 100% hat you cant do it better. I wouldnt mind a Prodigy myself if there was a noption to get it with plain rubber feet and no handles.

That Raidmax PSU is more Watts than you need. Not sure about quality though. Ideally a PSU that has shorter cables to make cable management a little easier would be good.

Something like a silverstone ST50FP with the PP05 short cable kit added.

Thanks for the tips guys. I hunted around, and I think I will hold off on the CPU until the 6800k comes out.

dont go for Raidmax go for a Corsair CX430 or a Antec VP450 your computer does not need more power if future proofing then go for a SILVERSTONE ST50F-ES 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply $46.13 Shipped

Hope that helped thumb.gif

Yes, avoid the Raidmax. Even a low-cost 400W Corsair will be better than a 630W Raidmax. The Raidmax might deliver 630 or it might not, but I guarantee whatever power it delivers is filled with noise and ripple that your components weren't meant to take.

Some updated info on Kaveri APUs due out at end of year. If that figured n your upgrade plans be aware its not compatible with FM2 APUs out now or being released this month.
