Calling All Audiophiles!

Thread Starter
Looking for some advise on home audio receivers. I purchased a set of Athena AS-F2's nearly a decade ago, and I've come to find out that I lucked out and happened to buy one of the best budget sets to ever exist. Now, I'm looking to get a bit more out of them buy getting a new receiver. I have a lackluster Pioneer VSX-515 at the moment, but these will soon be powering my cheap Polk speakers and I'd like to get a nicer receiver for the Athena's.

I don't know much about home receivers, though, and Google is failing, so I'll be relying solely on the advice I get here. Hoping to spend no more than $500, but if there are "must haves" above the target budget, I can be lenient.

What is(are) your source(s)?

If it were me, I'd get the Emotiva a-100 amp and hook up a pre/pro or whatever source you are looking for to it... or the UPA-200 if I needed more power.

Probably the Pioneer SC-1222-K, it's a rebadged SC-61.

They are $479.99 at today, and $412.95 open box at newegg.

Personally, I am waiting for a Sony STR-DN1030 on sale. They are on sale around $400 and retail now at $500.

The pros: Seems to have the most features of anything in this price range. Almost all other recievers requires bluetooth adapters or wifi adapters, but the DN1030 has both of them built in. Great reviews across the board. Price might drop with the release of a new version DN1040, which upgrades the only real con (interface) with a great new smooth and easy to use one.

The cons: the interface is bad and the remote is confusing. A lot of people will say, "I used to have a Sony and it was bad so this must be bad too."

Another con is Sony receivers have very small amp sections generally.

We have a RX-V573 we got at fry's a few months ago... it sounds very impressive I have it hooked up to some klipsch KG2.5 speakers... sounding quite good ... before had some B&W V202's hooked up to it and even bose 401s for a bit...

it has been working out very well, and Yamaha's sound quality tends to be very good indeed.

Just a quick update if you haven't got something already, but there are some good Denon receivers at Macmall.com refurbished for a great deal. I grabbed a 2113CI refurb for $299 free shipping when its normally closer to $500. It's missing the bluetooth and wifi options of the sony I was considering, but its also significantly cheaper and has Audessey XT room correction, which seems to be considered as the best room correction software available in this price range.

I'm not sure if they are still in stock though. Looks like they have the 1913 for $279.

Ecost had some for $289 as well, but they are also sold out. These things go quick.
