yes, the x58 is designed to run in tri, so you've to take advantage of it. it is funny how your chip will bottleneck at stock but can handle 2 7950s at only 4GHz. anyways, i would not suggest buying more stuff for your rig. just save it for an upgrade. another thing, though, make sure HT is on.

The answer will be different depending on which game your playing, the resolution, FPS your trying to hit, graphical settings...list goes on.

I know for a fact that my i7 930@4.4Ghz bottlnecks my single GTX 480 in Crysis benchmark if i use a low resolution and leave Vsync off, GPU usage will not make it too 100%
Be more precise with information you give us and you will get a more accurate answer wink.gif

This. At 2.66 its a bottleneck.

You need faster memory. I'm running 2133 with my 4.4ghz Bloomfield and there is no bottleneck

Lower the resolution in the Crysis 1 benchmark very low, vsync OFF and monitor your GPU usage, im sure it wont hit 100% usage at a low res.

EDIT:
Also this is the ram i used to run the benchmarks im talking of but i sold i on Ebay last year as i didnt like running my qpi/vtt too high.

Why would you even test at super low res? Do you game at that resolution?

No i dont game at that res, hell no.
The point im trying to make is that there is not one single answer, a CPU can bottlneck a GPU in one game and then be fine in another, it varies with each scenario.

PlanetSide 2 is another example of my CPU bottlnecking my GTX480 , but its getting better as the game is updated.

EDIT:

i tested at that super low res as i was specifically trying to see how many FPS my GTX480 could push in Crysis benchmark with Vsync disabled, purely out of interest, but i found that GPU usage would not hit 100%

To see if a CPU bottlenecks. At low resolutions+settings, your GPU isn't doing a lot of work, and so doesn't bottleneck the system when pumping the max FPS the CPU can request at any given speed.

I think Bloomfield has a similar IPC to Sand Bridge, I run my i7 930 @ 3 - 3.5Ghz with 6GB tri-channel RAM @ 1450Mhz. - 1600Mhz

Its ok, But, i have to say. i can run advanced PhysX on Metro 2033 with My Thuban @ 4Ghz perfectly fine, the 930 slows to a crawl with a significant GPU usage drop, even at 3.5Ghz which is as high as i can get it before it starts to boil on a not very good cooler, yet Metro 2033 was the last Nvidia PhysX game that was multithreaded so the 6 cores worked very well with it, after that all of Nvidia's PhysX games are single threaded and the Bloomfield ends up better.

Its still not great because of the low clocks, if you can get more Mhz out of it its a pretty good and capable CPU, even at 3Ghz its not going to strangle the 7950 in most things.

Or think about selling it and getting a used 2600K so you can run higher clocks, i am. smile.gif

Bloomfield and Ivy are a lot closer then you would think
