when i had my 920 at 3.8 ghz or above my sli 480's (core 890, mem 2240) were always at 99% playing crysis 3, 2 or bf3. there was no cpu bottle neck

Exactly, the GPU is not being used much, the most strain was on the CPU.
I forced this situation purposely to display that the CPU was the bottlneck in my system. Every system has one, its the part the holds back the rest thumb.gif

Hope that helps.

Ok if you say the cpu was the bottleneck can you show proof that the cpu was at 100% load?

CPU was not at 100% i can tell you that for sure.
Could be a bottlneck even at 12.5% CPU load thumb.gif

how?

Ok let me ask you since this is the same thing you did with the crysis bencmark

If I set crysis 3 on the lowest settings and my sli gtx 480's are not at 100% load then my i7-3820 @ 4.875 Ghz has a bottlneck? cuz that exactly what you stated before. Please explain. Thank you

If an app/game was only making use of one of eight cores.

Set graphics settings to lowest and have vsync disbaled also no fps cap or limit also all this with lowest resolution you can use. This will take as much strain as possible from GPU' and will make your CPU work hard.

Also im not sure about Crysis 3 as i only used Crysis and its not DX11 so wont allow use of as many cores.
Keep in mind that if an app only make use of one of eight cores then you would not get %100 load but would still be a CPU bottlneck.

Here are some screen shots and a video.

i7-3820 @ 4.875
GTX 480 @ stock (sli disabled)
lowest setting I could get on my 1920 x 1200 monitor

cpu usage

GPU usage. It only went to the 90's when I exited the game. frame rate limiter set to 400 in BF3

video. lowest setting and 3820 @ 4.875

This goes to show that what you were saying is not right. There is no way a 3820 is going to bottleneck a gtx 480. Here is the proof. back to the original thread. A i7-920 is not going to bottleneck a 7950, gtx 480 or even GTX 480 SLI once you overclock it.

Hi.
I was talking about in a specific game (Crysis 1), you decided to make and upload benchmarks of an entirely scenario of the one i was talking about.
What i said was that in the scenario i described the i7 920/930 would bottlneck the GTX480 and i am correct.

As i also said results vary from one game/app to another.

Sure what you show here is that in BF3 your CPU is not a bottlneck thumb.gif
I was talking about Crysis and not BF3.

Yes you did that. And you said that the gtx 480 would not show 100% in the benchmark and that's what made you conclude the cpu was the bottleneck. I just showed you that my gtx 480 also did not show 100% usage on a better cpu than the 920. The 920 will not bottleneck 1 gtx 480 at all. Im just trying to show that just bc the gpu in not at 100% load (on very low settings) it does not mean the cpu is the bottlneck.

Crysis and BF3 have about the same cpu load

to my findings, since in the past i had a 480 and now i own a 7950, its very simple:

920@stock will bottleneck these 2 gpus depending on the game

920@ 3.2 will bottleneck these 2 gpus B]depending[/B] on the game

920@ 4ghz will be smoother and will not bottleneck so much games. (there are rare games like MECHWARRIOR online that still kinda gets bottlenecked )

all this said wich i have tested same games on both cards ( 480/7950)

now please take into account that if you are using a MHD and not an SSD wen the game needs to read from the disk at anytime and moment, the game tends to slow down a bit, this is because of latency bettewn cpu and gpu that are fast wich a mechanical drive stalls cpu cycles for that very moment because of latency, do not take those moments into account wen talking about bottlenecking.

all in all, if you cant overclock your cpu, you will have some limitations on games, and you will be dissapointed and frustrated. unless you can find a decent motherboard that can help you overclock your cpu there is no other avail.

Now a word of warning, getting into cpu overclocking is no chillds play especially with the x58, you will have to test and test and test since every model and parts play very diferently, another note is that you might need a decent cooler too, so thats another equation to the budget

in total is

1.- cpu cooler
2.- a decent x58 motherboard
3.- good thermic paste
4.- new gpu

if that ammount of money needed to be spent is close to getting a new system, then its your choice to do so.

these are my honest and non bias experiences and i hope it helps u decide.

games ive played

@4ghg i7920 with 7950@1080- driver 13.6b2:

runs great: bf3 (auto settings+vsync no motion blur), tomb rider (max), league of legends (with gpu enchaments like aa on cpanel), blooddragon, marvel heroes, diablo3,

runs ok; mechwarrior online (depends on map), world of warcraft (had to tone down shadows to good, and ssao off), hawken, guildwars2 (had to tone down relfections off, and shadows mid)

another note is that depending on model the 7950 can be tedius to deal with because some of its power saving features, ive spend 3 weeks trying to get my gpu running well, and how it behaves it depends very much on ambien temps TDP, bioses, and drivers; with all this said, these cards arent for the avarage joe, if you get any issues, a decent to more advance knowlage of computers is required. sadly i had to point this out because of my experience with amd atm.

gl.
