Exactly the same reason.

Dude, the centurion is a real chip, AMD already said they will release it. Not really a rumor......The only thing left up for debate is the price it will release at.
you don't reqd do you.

500$ ????

At 5Ghz the FX is not at par with a simple 4770K, is similar in multitreading but even loser in single thread applications and gaming.
It should cost maximum around 350$, absoluttly not over !!!

I guess you people don't get that this chip is all about 'Because we can'.

It's not priced to compete, nor it is meant to. It's just AMD releasing a 5GHz Piledriver for the hell of it.

The second processor that got leaked is the FX-8770, again a similar designed chip which would replace the FX-8350 and would have 8 Cores and a TDP of 220W. Its clock frequencies are not known but i suppose near 5 GHz for this chip is pretty much expected. No pricing or release date was mentioned but the only thing we have near to a possible release date could be a teaser released by AMD themselves on their Facebook page, according to that, more details are expected to arrive at Computex 2013 which goes live from 4th June.

A FX-8770 would jibe with rumors of a June Vishera refresh from a few months back. No mention of clock speed. One could infer 220W rating would mean something in the 4.5 Ghz range.

I dont know what to think about this. I remember when the rumor of the 5 gig chip came out and was pretty quickly dismissed as a rumor. Tom Logan of OC3D said he has friends at AMD and they say theyve heard nothing for whatever thats worth. The price of this thing makes me think its not coming out either. A $700 Piledriver chip would rot on the shelves as nobody would ever buy it.

What I thought would happen would be something like what they did with the Phenom II's a couple years back while Bulldozer was being continuously delayed - they came out with the C3 stepping which was cooler running and better overclocking. I kinda thought theyd do something like that with Piledriver. More like a refresh with a little bit higher overclocking potential and lower temps. Something like an 8370 that had stock clocks around 4.4 with 5.0 Turbo and could routinely hit 4.8 overclocked but on much lower voltage wiith lower temps for $225. Id be first in line for one of those.

Who would buy a CPU that requires massive cooling, a HUGE power hog, and a MASSIVE price tag for a CPU from a company that prides itself on price/performance??

Example ME...Why? Enthusiast, I like powerfull CPUs, original interesting CPU, Power consumption after doesnt care me. If will be 1000W TDP CPU with huge performance I take it.
