Sound card just to output optical

Thread Starter
I need a soundcard just to process and output opitcal. The sound quality of the 3.5mm and DAC are not going to be a factor. My big issue right now is that my onboard realtek will not process 88khz audio, and I have a sizeable amount of it. This is going to go optically from my PC to my external PS Audio DLIII DAC.

Any ideas?

You may want to look at JPlay software. You can get 24/96 out of a USB port with ASIO, Wassapi or even better Kernel streaming.
The software, pioneered by Gordon Rankin of Wavelength Audio, pretty much bypasses Windows sound and loads digital music files into memory and streams it from there to a USB port. It makes your computer into a "digital transport".

There's a free demo (crippleware though, a 5 second dead spot in he music every 2 or 3 minutes) but otherwise filly functional. There's also a pretty active forum for help.

The results are rather amazing!

While my DAC does have USB, I would rather electrically separate myself from my PC. They are a noisy thing, and I can't stand that.

Thanks for the link though, i've never heard of it before. I do use WASAPI through foobar though.

My current setup is:

.flac library

foobar2000 WASAPI

Onboard sound via TOSLINK optical

PS Audio Digital Link III

Little dot 1+

Grado PS500

My current setup is:
.flac library
foobar2000 WASAPI <--- You'll find better SQ with Kernel streaming
Onboard sound via TOSLINK optical <--- You'll find better SQ with asynchronous USB
PS Audio Digital Link III
Little dot 1+
Grado PS500

Getting SQ back to the original, live performance is like peeling back layers of an onion. JPlay peels back a layer and JPlay mini peels back another. I use an Aqvox power supply to power a Dragonfly DAC. Gets rid of the noise in the computers USB power.

Okay, so I've spent the last hour or so listening to music via optical, usb, and JPLAY.

I cannot for the life of me ABX Jplay. Just can't. And it would have to be a pretty amazing difference for me to drop $130 on it.

Optical USB is noticeable though. USB sounds better at the end of the day on most tracks. Less sharp, more dynamic range, less sibilance on stuff like highly pitched reed instruments, high female vocals and cymbals.

Now this does make me a sad panda because it renders all my files over 44khz useless to me. I guess I will need to abx some high sample rate tracks over optical vs down-sampled ones over USB - unless you have another idea.

Setup like this....

Here's a guide for setting up USB audio from audioquest.

You also need to set up kernel streaming, which is kind of hard to get info about.
Some

There's also some stuff you can do with the internal clocks windows uses. The overclockers are into that, but I haven't tried any of it yet.
