In my own opinion the OP should just find a cheap 2500k/2600k and overclock it, he will get higher clocks then he could on Ivy, and if the rumors are true (haswell runs hotter then the blazes of hell) higher clocks then Haswell as well, balancing out the slight IPC increase of both of those chips, and saving a good deal of money to buy something else.

point taken, sandies and ivy's are still beast chips smile.gif

I'm going against mainstream here and say that I would definitely get i7 if you are not on very strict budget. Jumping from 920 to i5 Haswell would be a downgrade in some new games. I really regret buying 2500K, 2600K would've been more future proof CPU. Back then everyone said that HT is useless but properly multithreaded games have shown otherwise. I know most games are only using 1-2 threads but there are exceptions. I tested my friends 2700K on games. HT on gave +10-15 minimum fps in BF3 multiplayer, map was Gulf Of Oman 64-player. GPU was overclocked GTX 680. BF3 supports at least 6 cores.

Another game where HT helps quite a lot is Crysis 3 with 1.3 patch. New consoles are coming with 8 core CPU's, it's very likely that it's going to affect PC ports.

This reminds me of a situation when Q6600, first affordable quad core, was launched. Everyone and their mother said that quad cores are useless. Then GTA IV and BF BC2 were released and dual cores suffered horribly on those games, multiplayer was almost unplayable. Meanwhile my "useless" CPU was just fine.

Used 2600K / 2700K is a good option, it's not much slower than Haswell clock for clock. HT doesn't affect overclocking that much with Sandy & Ivy, that was problem only on Nehalem platform.

As for Sandy / Ivy motherboard, GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H is one the best ones for affordable price. Haswell reviews haven't been released yet, just gotta wait for couple of days.

Well I want to get to at least 4.5 if not somewhat Higher so I need a chip that can hit that on WC if not air. And I cant order until next friday anyways so I will wait until then to see which chip comes out on top, Ivy, Sandy or Haswell. Just want to find out what one I should look at for gaming with a sli 580 system, at least until I can sell my wc sli 580s to get me a 780, then move to sli 780 later. but if I have to buy my 2 780 it will be father down the street, because I have to build a second computer soon, the one I am using is before the i7 chips so it older then dirt and been road hard and is starting act up.

I agree with Seid. With the next gen consoles a few months away, more and more games are going to be heavily multi-threaded, which means HT will see much more use than it does now. Looking ahead I think an octo-threaded CPU will be much more "futureproof" so to speak.

If you can stretch your budget spring for the i7.

Woah, 1.3 fixed the poor HT utilization then? Can you like the original source of that chart? I'd love to read it.

Also take into consideration WHERE you are buying your parts from. Do you have a microcenter local? If so no reason not to spring for the 3770k because its so cheap there. Not to mention they always have package deals if you buy say RAM, CPU and mobo all in the same trip! Love me some microcenter!

Here we go, it's German site but Google Translate helps: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fi&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcgameshardware.de%2FCrysis-3-PC-235317%2FTests%2FCrysis-3-CPU-Test-1068140%2F&act=url

Despite AMD FX 8350's bad IPC it's better than 3570K in Crysis 3. CryEngine 3 is perfect example of future of gaming, properly multithreaded.

I would only buy i5 if I upgraded the CPU every year, i7 will stay relevant longer.
