Can you daisy chain UPS's?

Maybe? Plug UPS 1 into the wall and then plug UPS 2 into the backup power plug on UPS 1? Is there any reason this would be a bad idea?

The manuals say don't do it... and it sounds like a bad idea to me.

I don't remember exactly what would happen if you did do it, but I wouldn't recommend it. I've heard it will drastically lower the lifetimes of the UPS because they aren't designed for such function. The first UPS will most likely clip because it will be overloaded. The 2nd UPS will attempt to charge off the first, which will cause all sorts of problems.

Too much load on the first maybe. Are you trying to get a longer battery life? It might work but if you want a full load on both then you probably run into trouble.

That should work, unless any downstream backup supply doesn't like to be powered by stepped square waves (what most backups put out) and needs to be fed a nearly pure sine wave. But you'll have to derate each upstream backup by the efficiencies of all the downstream ones to get a good estimate of the power needs. IOW if the computer needs 300W and the backup connected to it is 80% efficient, then the upstream backup needs a capacity of at least 300W/80%, or 375W, and any 80% efficient backup upstream to that backup would need a capacity of at least 469W.

It would be better to use just a single backup supply and substitute its battery with a sealed one having a bigger amp*hour capacity. If you use an unsealed battery, be careful of the acid fumes, which can corrode nearby surfaces.
