There is nothing wrong with "More Ghz" as you imply. If you can get a higher clock out of the same architecture, there is no reason not to, especially if your target consumer doesn't care about power. What DOESN'T work is to design an architecture with high clock rates as a "goal" because you will almost certainly be sacrificing operations per clock cycle to get marketable clock speeds.

I hope that someday Nvidia and AMD can understand what makes Intel CPUs so good, their low power consumption. It is definitely worth it to trade performance for TDP, it's what Intel has been touting for years and it's working for them, look at their market share. Haswell is being marketed as a success all over other outlets, like my Google News feed. They traded performance in for lower TDP and it's a huge success!

GPUs will not really take off until we start seeing AMD and Nvidia sacrificing performance in order to get our GPUs into a 95w power envelope. I would gladly take 5% increases in performance per generation in GPUs in exchange for reasonable heat and power consumption.

Does that sound stupid to you? Because that's what every enthusiast that puts power consumption over performance sounds like to me. Power consumption is just an excuse to give enthusiasts under-performing chip. And energy costs aren't that expensive, and if someone lives in an area with cheap power, they shouldn't have to sacrifice performance for power consumption because someone lives in some place with high power requirements. If you can't afford it, don't do it. If you don't want to spend a ton of money on gas, you don't buy a fast car that uses more gas than a prius.

This whole "I'm an enthusiasts I want the fastest things I can afford and then two tweak them but MUH POWER CONSUMPTION!" needs to die a quick death, it's the most inane and ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

whats the fuss about this high TDP !?
i mean do OCers even care about this confused.gif
nd isn't a OCed Piledriver supposed to consume this much power at this speed ?

I don't doubt AMD would launch a limited edition, highly clocked, CPU for a premium, but two ?

And ruin two series numbers (and if logic is applied, everything in-between) - 8700 and 9000 series - along the way ? Not to mention this doesn't make any sense, the performance increase, especially given that they are both higher clocked Piledriver FX-8300 series CPUs, with no architectural improvements at all, makes all of this nonsense. The next series - based on the Steamroller architecture is supposed to be the FX-4500, FX-6500 and FX-8500 series.

Very good rebuttal to me basically saying "why are a bunch of people on a site called 'overclock' worried about stock power consumption when they're all running several components that make far more heat than a 220w CPU and most of these CPUs with low stock numbers go completely out the window when they get overclocked anyways."

You have definitely changed my mind, man. Going to sell off my rig, get a power efficient dual core with very low clocks, and then get a very power efficient GPU, maybe a power VR!

I'm not normally the type of guy to worry about saving power, but swapping all my 100w light bulbs for 14w LEDs or something, or lowering the AC, or anything like that just seems stupid. The best way to reduce CO2 emissions and stop global warming is to use more power efficient computers.

And just as a disclaimer, if you either have a sub 80 IQ or are some sort of 15 year old summer kid who had his parents buy their rig and you don't know anything, I'm being completely sarcastic.

They care about it when AMD's name is on the CPU.

Amd Fan : "Ohh my FX9000 smokes a 4770K by 2% but you cant bring up that its clocked 37% higher because its stock clocks"
Intel Fan : What happens when you overclock the 4770K?
Amd fan : DOESNT MATTER MAN.. STOCK CLOCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is no different then Nvidia releasing that overclocked 680 to beat the HD7970GE - when both are running "stock" the GE will lose yet i bet you have no problems seeing it that way... rolleyes.gif

Not to mention your precious 4770K getting the mediocre reviews for it's overclocking headroom compared to previous chips, but i guess i just did. tongue.gif

Ok let's talk about performance then. Can this provide a better performance than a 3770k or 4770k?
And don't give me that stock clocks only arguement, we are overclockers, we overclock, don't tell us not to.
No "future" arguements either, let's talk about "now"
