Stock 8350 system idles at 87w. Running linx it loads at 281W. Looks pretty close to 200W from the CPU alone from a 125W TDP processor.

Back when I was measuring power consumption from my server I ran LinX while measuring the current draw from wall with a current clamp.

Regular high load usage (Minecraft server with plugins off to the second core, with 8 users bombing the crap out of the world, resulting in constant 100% processor usage and RAM loaded up to 85%) drew approximately 180W from the wall for the whole system.

Running LinX made the power spike into the 250W realm, and the cooler was no longer able to cope with the overclocked processor.


As much as we love to stress test with Prime95 and Linpack, it is absolutely unrealistic and unrepresentative of what you are likely to reach even when transcoding video.

You simply haven't counted VRM efficiency and PSU efficiency. And don't forget motherboard TDP+ many resistors heat added up
Did he mention his board and PSU? Of course not. and we all know that AM3+ boards definitely chews more power than a Z77 board or a FM2 board

Actually he did list the hardware used to measure each of those systems.

Those parts are at idle. The only part drawing any extra power during LinX is the CPU. So you can roughly see how much power the CPU is drawing after comparing the idle to load numbers exactly as he did.

What about VRM inefficiencies? What about PSU inefficiency? Here's one with a difference of 118w at stock and one with a 129w difference.

Not sure what has happened to his system and his readings but when you're pulling a full 80w extra over other reviews..well, there's something wrong.

You have definitely changed my mind, man. Going to sell off my rig, get a power efficient dual core with very low clocks, and then get a very power efficient GPU, maybe a power VR!

I'm not normally the type of guy to worry about saving power, but swapping all my 100w light bulbs for 14w LEDs or something, or lowering the AC, or anything like that just seems stupid. The best way to reduce CO2 emissions and stop global warming is to use more power efficient computers.

And just as a disclaimer, if you either have a sub 80 IQ or are some sort of 15 year old summer kid who had his parents buy their rig and you don't know anything, I'm being completely sarcastic.

My IQ is actually 136. You wrote that 2 7970's use about 200w.
But i think i get you now, You only use them in idle to save power ( and the planet ) right? I consider myself green to, but on a site call'd ocn where everyone overclocks.

The difference is he's using Linx, which seems to demand the most from FX (gets all FP and Int units chugging). FXs Furmark so to speak. Not saying it will draw that much often, but I think with OC CPUs there is an expectation that the system be capable of dealing with a completely loaded scenario.
