The 220w tdp is just the cpu alone, 8350 have 125w tdp.

Fair enough, but are any of the SB-E chips truly 8 usuable cores? No... they have two locked cores that you can't really use. As far as the choice of an 8-core AMD over the 3930K, sure, most people have a limited budget, usually no more than $2K... after all, we are in a recession right now and money is tight for a lot of people. I built my sig rig last spring and my case, MB, CPU, and RAM cost as much as what I'd have paid for a 3930K and a decent X79 MB. A complete X79 would have cost what I spent for my full tower + all my peripherals (keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, and speakers). That's exactly why I chose an FX 8-core CPU over an IB i7 or a SB-E i7. Budget tends to define what you can do. I will be fair though... with AMD getting more competitive on the CPU market again, with Haswell's launch today, and the IB-E launching this fall... we should see a slight drop in the SB-E prices later this year. Also, with the Radeon 8000 series due out later this year, we'll see the price of the 7950/70s drop even more. Where am I going with this? It might not seem to obvious yet to people, but the overall price-performance ratio across the board is getting better... consider you want to build a very nice folding/gaming tower... using today's newegg prices...

sub $2,500 i7-3930K rig

ASUS R 4 E - $429.99
i7-3930K - $569.99
Mushkin Enhanced Chronos 240GB SSD - $159.99
WD Blue 1TB - $69.99
Sapphire Vapor-X 6GB 7970GE - $559.99 ($20 MIR = $539.99), plus 4 free games)
InWin GROne White tower - $129.99 (addt'l 15% off promo code = $110.49)
32 GB GSkill RJ-Z DDR3-2133 (8x 4GB) - $289.99
Corsair H100i - $109.99 ($10 MIR = $99.99)
LG 12x BR rom drive - $39.99
Corsair HX750W - $139.99 ($20 MIR = $119.99)

Total : $2,499.90 - $50 MIRs + promo discount (-$19.50) = $2,430.40+ shipping w/ 4 free games...

Sub $2,500 AMD Rig...

FX-8350 - $199.99 ($20 off promo code = $179.99)
ASUS C 5 F-Z - $214.99
32GB GSkill RJ-Z DDR3-2133 (4x8GB) - $284.99
InWin GROne White tower - $129.99 (15% off promo code = $110.49)
2- Mushkin Enhanced Chronos 240GB SSD - $319.98
2- Sapphire Vapor-X 6GB 7970GE - $1,119.98 ($40 MIR + 4 free games)
Corsair H100i - $109.99 ($10 MIR = $99.99)
Corsair HX750W - $139.99 ($20 MIR = $119.99)
LG 12x BR rom - $39.99
WD Blue 1 TB $69.99

Total : $2,519.89 - $70 MIRs = promo discount (-$19.50) = $2,430.39 + shipping w/ 4 free games

The difference in gaming performance would be noticeable... but not all that much, even with the frametime issue in Crossfire... And one could simply use one 7970 for gaming, and use them both when folding... but the price difference is the big point I'm making. Same components throughout other than CPU/MB. I went with the best ROG board available for each, 32 GB of the same brand, frequency, and latency memory (although the AMD rig RAM was slightly cheaper simply because binning 8 dimms that are as close to perfectly synchronous together is a more time consuming and difficult process than finding 4 dimms that are), same SSDs and HDDs, same GPUs, case and power supply... the AMD rig freed up the money for a second GPU and SSD... which will give the AMD rig a serious chance to at least compete with the i7 in gaming, and it will easily out perform the i7 at folding with the dual GPUs. That's why some people still prefer AMD... and the AMD performance is much better now than it was 2-4 generations of processors back. You have to give them credit for nothing else than hanging on the last decade and now, they're making a serious effort to change things at AMD and bring their hardware back on par with Intel and Nvidia. Bottom line... I wish AMD all the success possible over the next 4-5 years, because enthusiasts everywhere, each and every one of us, will benefit from the push at more efficient R&D from all parties, better tech available, and prices will finally start being competitive points again.

Pretty easily if you have air conditioning and decent case airflow. All you need is a Cooler Master 212+. I've done it on Zambezi and Vishera. Folding I'm not sure. You might greenhouse above 67c.

I don't think people realize a 3770K @ 5.0Ghz puts out around 200W TDP as well.

Haswell seems even hotter.

Very few Zambezies and far from the majority of Vishera's will be stable at 5GHz on air, certainly not on a 212+.

If you mean you can bench at 5GHz, that's one thing. Actually using the chip day in and day out, for anything important, no way.

There wasn't much expectation of Bulldozer besting Sandybridge in ST, what caused AMD a string of headaches was that in some things it was slower than Phenom II. Perhaps AMD should have experimented with introducing a new architecture in the mobile space instead of the server , performance desktop space. Less material for people to slam them with.

lol stop...

I owned a 8120 and currently use a 8350... with an airconditioned room (central air house, with this room having an additional air conditioner to cool it further) and a hyper 212+ evo - you aren't pulling 4.6ghz on that 212 on either of these chips, let alone 5ghz.
